ATi release a new set of WHQL'd drivers every single month. Nvidia releases new drivers quite often too, but apparently we have to wait much longer for WHQL'd ones from nvidia...

That being said, I haven't tried those new ones yet. I tend to stick with certified drivers, had some nasty experience in the past (!)

Cheers,

use this application to clear all entries of the driver after installing

http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.html

I find that simply uniinstalling them doesn't take all the files out and sometimes the new driver skips replacing them.

this app is free and will remove nvidia ati and mainboard drivers (you pick what you want to remove), reboot then install the new one

That way you get a fresh test with no anomolies from left over files from previous drivers.

I just install over any previous driver. Why is this bad?

Will I be better off for sure doing it the long way?

What will I notice different?

Doing all the following every time a new driver comes out is a hassel.

nVidia:

1. Unplug nic card or modem from net or disconnect

2. Remove nvidia from add/remove programs

3. Reboot into safe mode (F8 during boot up)

4. On reboot into safe mode WinXP SP1/SP2 will auto detect and install drivers. Just let it do its thing. If you can cancel out of the auto install hardware wizard then skip the rest and run Driver Cleaner! If you can NOT cancel out of auto detect wizard then...

5. Navigate to device manager->display adapters->highlight nVidia and click uninstall or remove but don't reboot

6. Disable any AntiVirus Software (If you don't disable is than it could give trouble)

7. Run Cab Cleaner (not needed, but recommended)

8. Run Driver Cleaner

9. Empty recycle bin and reboot

10. Install the new drivers

FYI, the "correct" way to update video drivers:

1. Uninstall in windows via control panel

2. Reboot into Safe Mode

3. Use a driver cleaner program

4. Reboot into Normal Mode

5. Install new drivers.

:stupid:

This is the correct way to install drivers. As metioned earlier, DriverCleaner is the way to go. There is a Readme file that comes with it. Yes, there are a few more steps, however you have the peace of mind that there aren't any old files from former drivers conflicting with the ones you just installed.

I might have to give the 66's a go... or maybe I'll just let Fatguy be the hampster. viiiper, had you tried the 43's?

@Ghost_Sup

Thanks a million for the help over voice chat in enabling the advance nVidia Options and

for the step by step guide in setting the SLi to run GRAW up to 80FPS @ 1920x1200.

I'm going to run the 84.66 drivers as linked earlier from http://www.guru3d.com/

and see how it all goes...... [current in game temp. of 7900GTX-oc is 55-60 Celsius

although I have issues with chat program Ventrio [to resolve].

I will try to grab some screens from the setup procedure you talked me through and post for others at a later date...

till them.

Best regards viiiper

Follow the correct way to uninstall them... left over files can = no increase between installing a new over an old that may have given you a 20% increase in performance. Yes also i have had this happen to me and cleaning the driver and installing a new put me up to speed.
