Favourite mission?

Recommended Posts

I know I'm tempting fate here... but please don't post reasons why you are having issues with the MP in this thread, or any other bugs/issues. There are more than enough threads on that already. This is a thread for the guys enjoying the SP campaign.

My favourite mission so far is Mission 4 (Strong Point). I should note that I haven't played beyond this mission.. in fact, I haven't finished it yet. Nonetheless..... Apart from the fact that it's the first "more open" level, it's also where I really started to appreciate how good the enemy AI is... and the tactical possibilities.

At one point I entered a building and climbed to the top floor for a better view of the surroundings. Had a quick look around, then started issuing commands to my team. One of the guys starting taking heavy fire.... and there were 4 or 5 bad guys taking him on. I stood up to try lend assistance from my rooftop vantage point, and started taking fire from 2 different directions. OK, scrap that plan. I had to duck into cover and try and help just using the tactical map. For the next 3 or 4 minutes, I was ordering 1 or 2 guys on a flanking route, taking out 1 bad guy... before those guys started taking fire, and I had to repeat the process. Took a few minutes of frantic activity, flanking the bad guys one by one.... the whole time with panicked calls for help from the guy under fire. Watching it all happen on the tac map was great... the enemy AI reacted to fire very well - moving around, trying to flank my guys, taking cover etc etc.

It was fantastic stuff... the most immersive tactical gaming I've ever had. In addition, the lighting and sound on this level are great, and the sort of shanty town collection of shacks makes for some really good tactical possibilities. Good stuff, GRIN :)

@ trident, I'd have to say Strongpoint is the best so far. lastnight I just finished the first part of mayday, May day is ok, but stroinpoint is a nut buster mate. just trying to take out those bunkers is the first hard part, then going to destroy that powerplant is next as I kept getting nailed from my blindside aside from ordering my boys to cover my 6. I take the lead always, good or bad, and those boys my backup. it's just that there are so many corners it's hard to get them all. but beware the snipers on the roof tops. then getting the roadblock cleared was ok, but the destroying the artillery part was a bit more complex in that you are better off hugging the side of the playarea(eastside)

I personally enjoyed Mayday Mayday. Right from the beginning it was amazing. Mexico at night with tracers reaching up to your blackhawk. Then the other 2 choppers get blown to hell and you have to land and take out the 2 ADAT's in the park. After that assault the castle and then call in Apache's on the 2 artillery pieces. Nice large open area map. Reminded me alot of the origional GR. This would be a great map to have in MP gametypes such as LMS.

I'm on the tank mission "Armed for Bear" I think it's called. It's a blast. Especially after the need for stealth in the previous, solo, mission, "Mayday, Mayday" it's a relief to be out in the open, with your team, in daylight, no silencers, balls-out assault. It's a fantastic map and the mission has very, very diverse requirements including hostage rescue, defence against helicopters and and a hail-Mary tank run. It's fantastic, although I'm still trying to master tank control, which is a little less precise than deploying your regular team. Does anyone have any wisdom to share about this? The tanks keep changing direction and then getting shot in the butt by rebel armor.

I loved "Mayday, Mayday" and almost posted about how this mission alone justifies the implemntation of savepoints versus quicksaves. The last phase was really, really tense, it took me several attempts...

...Hugging the castle wall, I took out the patrol below with two quick bursts and had fair warning of the approaching patrol on the ledge by deploying the drone which is absolutely essential for this mission. They didn't stand a chance. You then have to snipe various perimeter guards and a MG nest that would otherwise cover your entry into the castle courtyard. One good thing about the AI: If you get good, clean kills you will not stir the hornet's nest but if you spray 'n pray they'll swarm and flank you and it's all over. The assault on the castle has to be frontal and there's a MG nest in there so it helps to be good enough with a frag to be able to toss it over the high wall. Failing here would involve a very long reprise to get back to this point. With precious little health I had to combine aggression with caution very effectively in order to take the courtyard and order the assault on the last mobile unit. After that, the exfiltration (as I believe it's called) was great, a mad dash for safety, pausing only to take out two enemy APCs with M-203s before they could disgorge their troops.

GRAW SP is by far the best tactical shooter I've ever played.

I'm on the Mayday Mayday mission now, and I agree that it would be a great map for LMS. I actually rather enjoyed the freedom of this mission.... I spent an awful lot of time doing "recon" for the last ADAT, appraoching from different directions just to see which was more viable. Loved the careful use of the drone to pinpoint enemy locations in the dark. I also really got a kick out of seeing bad guys patrolling with flashlights, dunno why - it was just a nice touch.
