Is the Radeon 9800 (256) the way forward?

Recommended Posts

Nearly three years ago to the day I bought the then 'Dogs ######' graphics card; Creative's GeForce Annihilator Pro 256. Last year I upgraded my m/board, processor and memory. I feel now that I should upgrade the graphics.

Will there be instant and obvious visual improvements if I do, or will I be wasting my dosh? I see that ATI are 'holding hands' with Ubi on the latters recent Raven Shield launch, but would this card improve GR?

First off, yes there will be amazingly noticeable visual and performance differences over your present card without a doubt m8, and no you won't be wasting ya dosh at all lol :)!

Whether you go for the mentioned ATI or another of the latest generation of NVIDIA/GeForce cards is commonly down to personal preference most of the time. Both are very impressive when all is said and done but either way you'll be very impressed with the differences :)!

Go for it, ya know ya want to hehehe!!

:D Thanks for the advice UT. I was also looking at Creative's Titanium 4600, which is just as expensive. Do you know of any websites that provide test results and comparisons, so I can see the pros and cons of each?

i also made the step of buying a 256 pro three years ago for UT and the game looked awesome, but shortly after getting GR i switched finaly to a 4200 and even that was a huge diference in quality and playablity

for reviews try sharkeys extreme or guru3d or even toms hardware .com or nvnews.com these are the sites i generaly use to get an overall rating

NP Dick Splash lol :)!

As said check out Toms Hardware m8!!

If ya interested lol!! The card I have (listed in my sig), benchmarked at 13,657 (3DMark2001 Pro) with a few settings slightly tweaked down which I put in another post but have put it here to save you searching for it lol, that will give you a rough idea of what to expect from the 4600 as it should perform slightly better still than the 4200 :).

It averages around 12,800 with the GFX settings very slightly above a medium level and I've had a max frame rate of 233 FPS. I'm definitely impressed with this card tho for the money, it's certainly not the best available out there but with those results it will certainly do for me lol. Interestingly it benchmarked better on this system than the same card tested on Tom's Hardware site with them using a Pentium 4 too if you happen to look at the NVIDIA info as well as the ATI info too :)!

The Asus was a reasonably priced £130 too so can't complain for that money, the place I got that from currently list a Creative 4800 for £196, assuming the 4600 will be somewhere inbetween the 2 prices it doesn't sound too bad at all price wise and you'll certainly get a lot of performance for the dosh hehe :)! It'll be cheaper still for ya if ya US too lol, prices in the UK aren't generally wonderful lol!!

Hope that's of some more help :)!

The video card for you is totally up to and the information you gather about your card. The reviews so far point to ATI either 9500pro/9700pro for performance and price. http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030...00-5200-26.html

The link should provide more information also maxium pc magazine has information about each hard ware in it latest magazine.
