Field of View strange huh?

What I noticed, is while zoomed in with the scope/sight, you can drop the barrel and your vision is still zoomed. I used this to my advantage, dropping the sight to see more, but still being zoomed in and just pulling up the sight to take the kill when I saw it.

Is this what you guys are talking about? Because other than this, I don't see what you are seeing.

Maybe it also gives that feeling because of the FPWV. I guess in reality you wouldn't have the gun this much in your FOV. It probably would have been a bit lower, so in some cases you would only see the barrel or wouldn't see the rifle at all. As some said, probably a patch will fix it or will make it adjustable.

I notice in most games you'll see less of a weapon as if your gun is on your hip. but other than that I really don't understand where you guys are talking about the zoom or tunnel feeling.  They went for realism so when you have your gun up it's by your face, and that's what it looks like on the screen to me.

the games i play: BF2, CoD2, America's Army, CS:S, UT2k4, and whatever else tickles me at the time.

I am one of those having problems with the FOV implemented in GRAW.

First off, I have played many 3D FPS for many hours in a row without problems.

As I understand it, a game normally implements a player Field Of View (FOV) of 90 degrees.

Some games implement other degrees of FOV (85, 80) and this causes problems for a number of players. Somehow our brains detect that something is not right and this results in motion sickness.

I am having these problems in Vietcong, First2Fight and Oblivion, where it has been confirmed that the FOV is less than 90. I have never had a problem in games where the FOV has been >= 90.

I hope this answers what it is exactly that we are experiencing.

Ahh...ok, I get it now :)

I guess I just don't notice that as much as some do. I did think it was weird that my view stays zoomed in when I drop the sight though, doesn't seem natural.

not really. if there are demos of those games maybe i'll go take a look.

The only thing I could see giving motion sickness is the screen bob when running. CoD2 will do that to me sometimes. But other than that I don't get it. You're looking at a flat screen, you're not going to get periphial vision. That's the limits of all shooters unless they start making them with fisheye vision. The only thing I see that could make you think it's zoomed with the placement of the weapon on the screen, which if you hold up a gun IRL(with the intention of aiming of course), that's about how it would look

CC: First to Fight is probably the worst you could try. FOV made me nauseous within 4-5 minutes of playing ... the level design made it even worse.

GR3's isn't that bad but I agree it feels a little tight. Movement becomes frustrating when you can't "see" right ... very disorienting. Seems like GRIN would've paid more attention to something like this considering all the time dedicated to the "body-awareness" features.

For people that still don't understand the concept of field of view, try this out. Put your hands flat on the side of your head sticking out parallel while you are looking straight ahead. Notice how you cannot see anything to the side of you which is your peripheral vision. Some call it tunnel vision. It is annoying and causes a lot of people to experience a motion like sickness. There needs to be a fix for this before I buy the game. Whether its a patch or a command that we can change the fov.

I understand what field of view is, but I don't see how you think this game is different than any other. You can't get arced vision with a flat screen. It doesn't and has never happened. you are looking at the virtual world through a window. it's not like you stick your face through it so you can see out of the corner of your eyes. So i really don't understand what you think can be done about it. I've never played a game that made me feel like I had periphial vision. This game's FOV seems exactly the same as every other game I've ever played. that's why i don't get it.

LOL, your still clueless on the subject. Trust me with what I'm saying. Trust all of the people that get motion sick from playing it. I explained it the best I could. If you have Quake 3 or 4, I can tell you the console commands to change the fov in game and you will see the huge difference.

Yeah, the feild of veiw is less peripheral, which also makes the image seem more telephoto. By telephoto, the image loses some perspective (phantom 3rd dimension in a 2d image). For me, some of the three dimensionality is lost, but it's not horribly bad. Like its been said before, changing the FOV shouldn't be too hard.

so how does pulling back the camera change anything? explain that to me. I understand field of view but don't understand what you think you can do about it. You want the camera to be farther back in the head of the character so that you see from his brain instead of his eyes? I don't see how that helps your motion sickness. You're still seeing everything on a 2d plane. you'll still have a "tunnel" of a monitor to look through. the only thing you'll change is the position of your character and weapon on screen. your explanation of how this causes a sickness or how it differs from other games is insufficient. I started playing games with Quake 3 so maybe that's why I never have seen any problems. I never had a problem with Q3. Doesn't pulling back the camera just bring you into a 3rd person view which is what everyone hated when it was discussed?

what I see in the game looks what i feel is as close as you can come to how you'd see it in real life. the only way i see to expand your field of vision would be to get a wider monitor, otherwise you will be taking the camera out of the characters eyes and putting it behind him.

then enlighten me :spam1: if you had a clue you'd explain it.

noone seems to be able to inform me on how they think the problem can be solved besides merely pulling the camera backwards which removes you from the first person view. unless there are games out there that are creating an arched image. or if you adjust the aspect ratio and res it's just going to squish everything onto your screen. so I'd like someone give me a clue. the problem is you guys keep trying to explain what field of view is. I know what field of view is. What you don't explain is how it's changed. Does it pull pixels forward, or squish more on the screen distorting the image? etc etc

give me those console commands for Q3 and i'll try them myself.

edit: nevermind I found a site with comparisons. It pinches the image. Now why was that so hard for someone to say? I guess I'm the opposite of you people because playing like that would make me sick and not give me any more feeling of 3dness.

If you don't know don't ask.

How do you fix it? Well they give us a command or graphic option to do so. And no it's not pulling the camera back it's simply modifying the Degree and wich the camera is pitched. As it is now it feels like 70, or 70% vision.

Only way I could show you is to load up UT04 demo. Find the FOV option and play with it.

they probly chose this FOV so the Guns look right.

In most shooters the gun is renderd at the Different FOV than the world, to make it look right.

But becuase of the Body awarenes they had to tighten the view so you would get less cliping and the gun would not look weird.

I agree that GRAW's FOV is wrong.

I could play GR for 24 hours straight. But this game makes me green and purple all over after an hour or so.

My guess is that it's not just the FOV but also the engine being used now.
