power supply good enough?

Recommended Posts

i am planning on buying myself a new rig in the next month or so, but i have some doubts whether the power supply will be good enough for this rig:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Socket-939 Boxed

Gigabyte GA-K8NP-SLI S939/PCIE/DDR400

1024 MB Nanya SE DDR400 PC3200 Dimm

WD 300 GB UDMA100 7200RPM 8MB Cache

LG H10-AR DVD±R/RW OEM Dual Layer

XFX GeForce 7300GS 256MB TV DVI PCI-E

Creative 7.1 SB Audigy SE

Netwerkkaart On Board

Coolermaster Centurion 5

PC power supply 350 WATT FSP Ultra Low Noise

will it be good enough for this rig or should i invest a bit more money in something more powerful?

thanks

Here is some more info on the powersupply that comes with the pc: http://www.paradigit.nl/pdf/10007493v.htm

First, always check your motherboard manual.

On that note, I would say up your power supply. I am getting an SLI board and it recommended at least 400 wats for the minimum and if using SLI at least 550w.

sorry, guys. i have to admit i didn't think of doing a quick search on these forums before i posted.

After looking at both posts i have decided it will be best to go with more power, so i will buy 550W power supply instead of the 350 one, so i will save when i want to add a second SLI card in the future.

thanks everyone!

Any idea what brand PSU you will get? It is worthwhile to spend a bit more to get a high quality one (Antec, Enermax)

XFX GeForce 7300GS 256MB TV DVI PCI-E

I would suggest you consider getting at least a 7800 level card, especially for the work you do.

SLI is a bit of a gimmick for lower end cards like the 7300. (Ask Cpl Ledanek ;) )

The amount you will pay for 2x7300GS would be better spent on a single 7800 level card. If that's a little expensive now, it's worth it to wait 1-2 months more to save up the cash and wait for the price to drop (which it will as the 7900 cards are out)

no idea what PSU it is, it only says it is a FSB and i am not sure what brand it really is. but the store where i want to buy the rig also has the option to put in a 550W Coolermaster PSU. that is the one i will buy with the new rig.

I know the 7300 isn't the best card, but it comes with the rig and at the moment i do not have the money to afford a better one so i am planning on using it for the time being until i get another big paycheck so i can buy a better graphics card together with some more RAM.

For that dual core I would reccomend 450W. If you get a 7800, then definately. Otherwise you might find your computer will be unstable and might freeze. Thats the last thing you want when working on max or doing other work. You could try the 350, and it might work, but like i said, you might have some crashes when your CPU and vid card need the power. Also like cr6 said, get a good quality (and standards approved) PSU.

My SLI setup has two 6600GT. At the time of build, it was built for SCCT and HL2. I maxed the resolution on my 17" LCD and HL2 was bbbbeeeeeaaauuutiful. SCCT performance/fluid movement were great. Beautiful? No---why? Coz I was either on Nightvision or thermal imaging---like I said performance only.

BTW anyone wants to buy my 6600GTs?

BF2 IS awesome too but I haven't maxed it yet coz I only have 1 GB. The magic number is 2GB..

Now I am itching for two 7900GTX but my Lord gave me a reality check to get my real-life priorities straight. So my two 6600GT will have to do.

Another lesson I've learned from building SLI is that if you've got anything lower than 19" screen you're just wasting money on the second card. Coz you truly cannot appreciate what those two cards can do until hit the 1600x1200 resolution. I tried it on BF2, eye candy is sweet but my jeez, its harder to concentrate on the game. Even on HL2. Even various benchmark if you read enough will tell you that SLI HI-END cards do not posting high benchmark scores until they hit those higher resolution.

Someone here has a 30" Dell WDScreen and I know he would NEED----not want----need SLI or a 7900 GTX 512---WHICH btw, you many need to see Jimmy "The Fish" from Jersey or "Ricco" from Miami to get these 512GTX cards.

Shhheezzz.

Get a reality check and really research on what games your playing or what games you intend to play in the future.

I'm sticking with my SLI 6600GT and 17" until my Lord bless me (with a new job or gives me a baby, either one I'll be happy with  ).

Why? I'm waiting for one game and one game only.

GR:AW

Ask yourself: Is it a BF2/UTK2 wide open games for widescreen monitors or is it a RB6:UO urban warfare/close quarter battle?

Hmmmmm.......

two medium graphics cards or one high end graphic card?.....

Here's a curve ball: you want a side of Aegi-whatever card on that?

So! If you opt for high end card(s), then its almost the same analogy as having two ovens in your kitchen---so you can bake your brownies faster, right? You got enough power to juices those oven?

You want 9.1 speakers? Sure why not! How about a flat screen---36"? WHAT THE HELL! 50"!!! Pop that Saving Private Ryan movie, get the popcorn blowing in your 35cub sq microwave, pump that volume so you can drown your blender noise, why your PC is running diagnostics, washer and dryer is running to remove the vomit stains on your sheets or remove that lipstick that does NOT belong to your GF/WIFE, then BOOOOOMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!

Lights out.

Your fuse box blows.

Not enought power. Not enough juice.

I got another 6600 128MB OC GT with 600W Strider from Silverstone. Quite as hell.

Modular/sleeve whatever you call those wires. Overkill? Not until I get blessed and make an upgrade.

hope my rant helps.

:grin1:

Here's my upgrade pics swartsz I know what you'r going thru. I wish I can help you more to show you how I appreciate your mods.

yes, reality is what is keeping me from buying the rig i really want.

The reasons why i am going to buy this rig is mainly because of my 3d work, lately i noticed my current pc is struggling whenever i am working with 3ds max and the other tools but i just do not have the money right now to buy a pair of 7900's. Well i can afford it but i also drive an old car which will need some repairs in the near future so i also need to save some money for the possibility it will stall on me soon.

So my thoughts were, i am buying this pc right now and when i have some money to spend in the future i will be able to upgrade the parts that are not top notch right now, like the vid card and maybe more RAM and in the meantime i will be able to do my work in 3d and enjoy GR:AW

and maybe i haven't been too clear, but the rig comes with just one 7300.
