BigOlBrain
Less linear missions, bigger maps and smarter enemy AI seem to be the biggest selling points for the PC version. "Realism" is not really the issue at all. I agree. I think those things will be the difference. Less linear missions would have been nice. One of my main problems with the 360 version. ghost627
please tell me... from what i understood i couldnt peak in multiplayer ... i looked all over for it ← You just hold the left bumper (above the trigger) and push to the right or left with the stick. You can also move slow while peaking.....it works VERY well. ← Also if you are crouched and hold the left bumber and press up. Your soldier will lean up. Like to look over objects just a little bit. FA sear
The PC version will certainly have SOME more realistic features, such as, the ability to look down and see your body, more control over your squad, and less linear missions, but considering that none of us has actually run it (except for the "insiders" here ), it is kind of hard to say at this time. Want more realism? Try OFP, but I have heard complaints about too much realism in OFP. Waiting around for things to happen, too much planning and preparation, too much complexity, too difficult to play in the hardest setting (you really cannot run around much at all once the gunfire starts), etc... It is nothing like GR, where you can get up and move about in a firefight, the enemy use quite a bit of grenades, grenade launchers, and RPGs, so unlike GR, you don't have the monopoly on usage of explosives. OFP is a great game, and although the graphics are not quite up to par (it would be impossible to have great graphics in a game with maps this expansive), I personally think it is much better than the [GR]/GRIT that everyone cries for. It wasn't a step up from the M4, but rather a step down. That was part of the issue. There were heat dispersion issues as well. Personally I don't think of it as anymore than a good M4. The rear site, similar to the MP5, is a real waste of time as that is one of the first things that would come off. We have a BUPS - Back Up Site - that folds flat out of the way of any optic. Which is the only time we use an iron site - when everything else goes to crap. Any specific changes made within the 416 that are not directly interchangeable with the M4 are a strike against the 416. You can mate the upper with a lower standard M4 so that says something good. The 416 is a good weapon but does nothing to advance technology into the future where you will find one of the keys to success on the battlefield. LOL, that is what I said in the UBI forums and people jumped all over me telling me that I did not know what I was talking about. I ran an M4 with a gas piston upper (not the 416), it was a Colt with a Bush 14.5 upper, that had a gas piston system. One of the guys I used to shoot with on a 200 acre farm brought a friend who had the setup. At the end of the day, the gun did not jam any less, nor did it really seem much cleaner inside. It needed just as much CLP shot onto the gas rings, and onto the cam pin. Now of course we often run a thousand rounds through each gun on days like that. Serellan
This discussion should probably be broken out from this thread, as it really has nothing to do with the realism of the game. However, I did want to chime in on the gas system. I have become more and more impressed with the AR-18 style gas/bolt system on my M17S. While the M17S has it's own shortcomings and wouldn't make it as a battle rifle (too heavy, right handed only, tight magwel, bad placement of mag release, gets too hot, crappy trigger, etc), I have found that the bolt and gas system to be easier to clean and maintain than an AR-15 style. Additionally, it seems to be much less finiky about cleaning and oiling, and ammo, than an AR-15 style. Now, I havn't taken it out and put it though the dirt, but I have put upwards of a 1000 rounds at a time through it , with no oiling or cleaning in between, without any malfuctions, which is not something I can say for most AR-15's I have fired. In addition, there seems to be much less fouling and carbon buildup on the bolt than an AR-15 style.
FA sear
M17 was a nice gun. It is a shame that Bushmaster stopped producing it. Personally under normal conditions, I have never seen problems with any good quality AR15s. It is only under full auto fire that this platform seems to have problems. Now the same design shooting the .308 seems to fire just fine with the stronger cartridge. Maybe it is because it was originally designed for the .308. Either way, most people that own an AR will probably never experience a jam in semi auto mode. If it does jam, the gas rings probably just need to be replaced. Before I bought my M4, I had an AR15, and even after 500 rounds the CLP was still holding up and there was minimal carbon buildup. It is only in full auto mode that the CLP (or white lithium grease) tends to "cook off", and make the rifle prone to jam. Even then, a quick shot of lube on the gas rings and cam pin bring the gun right back up and running for a few hundred more rounds. I personally have never seen the excess carbon buildup that people talk about with semi auto rifles. The only gun I have seen with excess carbon buildup in semi auto was an FAL that was not cleaned for over 3,000 rounds. In semi auto mode, if an AR is cleaned every 500-1,000 rounds it really should not experience any excess buildup.

I guess when I talk about "excess carbon buildup", I should say that I havn't needed to use a dental pick to scrape off carbon off the bolt on the M17 after a day of shooting, and I have on an M16. Also, it could be that most of my experience with AR's was through issued weapons (and often shared issue weapons), that probably have many more rounds shot through them in their lifetime than any personally owned or individually issued weapon. Also, it could be that most of my experience with AR's was through issued weapons (and often shared issue weapons), that probably have many more rounds shot through them in their lifetime than any personally owned or individually issued weapon. Also, an M16 is a full auto, so they tend to overheat, whereas an M17 is semi auto. I know that during the time I had my AR15 it never overheated once. However, my M16 would overheat some, my M4 was about the same, and the commando I had was VERY prone to overheat. I had the upper receiver assembly replaced a few times with well over 100,000 rounds through it. In the commando the white lithium grease would simply "dry out" after a few hundred rounds, but again, a few drops of clp on the gas rings and the cam pin would get her going again. One other thing is that if you dealt with issued weapons then I am assuming they were Colt? I personally have not had very good experiences with Colt products, and I have to say that My Sendra M16 was probably a better gun than any Colt rifle. I'm not trying to flame Colt, but I have known a number of people with Colts, and they always seemed to have issues. Colt also lost out big on the DEA contract a couple of years ago to Rock River. They also fell behind Armalite, and Bushmaster placing a very distant fourth or fifth. BTW, have you "tricked out" the M17?

Yes, the majority of the service rifles I fired were Colts, although I also fired FN and Bushmaster mfgs (if I remember correctly). EVENTUALLY, I do have plans to "trick out" the M17S, mainly to improve on heat and cheekweld. I plan to get the handguard vented, and add a lower rail for a FG. Also, I want to remove the carry handle and replace it with a flat rail for the optic & backup iron sights, and the charging handle with a folding one to facilitate the optics. Next, I would thread and add a FH, open up the magwell a tiny bit to facilitate "drop free" mag change, and lastly, clean up the trigger a bit. It would look similar to this one: There is a guy who specializes in this, Kurt's Kustom, I just need to figure out how much I want him to do and how much I want to do myself. It all comes down to how many "projects" I have going at any one time.
