One IP banned and reported, things seem a lot better now.

Sorry about that, but I can assure this this does my head in as much as it does yours. It was probably some disgruntled kid who got banned for stepping out of line.

The thing is, these idiots are not bothering me (well they are I suppose) but what they are really doing is soaking up my time that I was going to spend on other things that the community would have benfitted from, which really annoys me. I had plans for GR.net this morning, instead I've been wasting time stopping a DOS attack.

Relax and have a pint mate. You can always say it was my shout. If I learned anything going to college in Oz it was the importance of visiting the pub. No worries. She'll be right mate.

I would like to officially apologize. As I am the one responsible for the database

errors you were receiving. I honestly was not trying to hack this wonderful site to

cause problems with people being able to use it. I was trying to rack the view counter up on the thread about the only video we have gotten all this time. I spoke with rocky on PM's and yet did wrong again by trying to lie my way out of it. I did not run any scripts or hacks to the server. I was sitting here reading the topic and looking at how the views was going pretty high in numbers and thought. You know if the views were even higher, enough to suprise the publishers (ubi) it might make them think. This game is even hotter than we thought! Maybe we should market differently towards our customers! Possibly releasing a demo and such. My intentions was not to cause any problems in this site.

While hitting the refresh button a couple times I noticed that the view counter went up. So I thought man, if someone was willing to sit here on his computer and hit that button over and over it would go extremely high. I began hitting it a couple times and started thinking about it. I thought what if I had an automatic mouse clicker to refresh manually while I was away from my computer. So I researched google and found one. Most people use it to record mouse movements to start up and close programs while they are away from their desk, installed it, and recorded myself refreshing the "trailer thread" here at ghostrecon.net. Then pressed the re-play button and let it go. When I told you rocky that I did not try to intentionally harm your website. I was being honest, but that was all I was being honest about. I thought in my mind that if I just refreshed really fast that it wouldnt download any information thus not causing any bandwidth problems with the server. If I was doing that to intentionally hack the server to cause problems I would have done it on an unkown and hidden thread that would have been 30 pages back in an old part of this forum so no one could have seen it.

I'm taking a big risk by making this post under my name. As many people know me by this name and I will continue to play by this name like I have since I started playing this game. Fair is Fair though and I did wrong. So I need to own up to it. So again officially to everyone at Ghostrecon.net I apologize.

To try to help and make up for some of the lost time members could not use this forum I tried to make a donation on the donation page. The link appeared to be dead. I dont know if this is because my IP is banned from this site and I have to use a proxy server. I just think the least that I could do was to make a donation. Granted the donation wasnt going to be a huge amount. My wife and I both lost our jobs recently and I just had considerable hail damage last night that busted my vehicle and some of my house up pretty bad.

Lastly I would like to thank Rocky for giving me the chance to own up to this. Most people would have told everyone who did this and made it public. Rocky, didnt he spoke with me and knew that I was the one. He had the logs right in front of him. I told him the name I went under and everything. He still didnt come here and tell everyone. For that I hold great respect.

PS.. If anyone out there sees what I did and gets any ideas to do it to. Dont..you will get caught to.

WOW I cant believe any one would go to that trouble to up a thread view count. Graw must really be getting to peoples heads because some of you guys are loosing it over this game.

As much as i cant understand why you would do such a thing, the fact that you owned up to it publicly and asked for forgiveness is respected but as for if it makes up for what you did that is up to the staff and admin who's time was spent sorting out this mess.

Set up a DB table that logs ,IP and time, with an auto ID as a Big Int.

php/asp script that writes to db on each visit, the time and the IP.

Same script count number of rows for that ip in last minute(or whatever timescale).

if number of rows from db is greater than a certain number say 60 Redirect them to a 'Noob Get a Life' Page.

Log the IP in a seperate log file to pursue later if need be.

At the end of the script have it delete all records from that table that are older than 24hrs say (this will keep the DB small).

Ive already told Rocky my Ip...plus he had already banned me. Born To kill,,im not computer illiterate, If I was doing all of this intentionally I would have used a proxy server in the first place like I have to now to make this post. Also, like ive said I wouldnt have done it on a post that would have been seen by many many people.

@VeLocityChaos,

Whatever your reasons, I'm sure most people have at some time made a bad decision in their lives, maybe creating some problems we actually didn't intend to create. I'm sure too that many of us then considered or maybe actually did try & lie our way out of it. Equally I'm sure that not so many people have the courage to come straight out and admit the error on a public forum, and I respect you for this.

(I'm also greatly relieved to learn that the new server Rocky's switched us to is not actually "dodgy" which I was beginning to fear! )

Lastly I would like to thank Rocky for giving me the chance to own up to this. Most people would have told everyone who did this and made it public. Me too; he is indeed a very good administrator / leader in every way.

Its really too bad that gr3 took 5 years to come to life but that doesnt give peple the right to cause problems for Admins and forum staff who already take time out of their lives to run this site for our benefit. They give enough time from their "outside ghost recon" lives to run this for us and to spam the forum causing trouble that they have to fix is to me like a slap in the face to them. You say "what's it going to hurt", well in the end it not only wastes the staffs free time but it hurts us aswell because rocky said in an earlier post he was going to do something on grnet that the viewers of this site could enjoy but instead he had to deal with this issue.

Apologize? For what?

Please, we've all forgotten to take our medication at one time or another and made Rocky pay for the bandwidth to send us the same data 420,000 times because our inflated ego and bat-like short-sightedness compelled us to think we could influence a multi-billion dollar company with an obvious ruse.

Well, ain't this a turn up for the books.

For the record, when things started to go wrong on the site I was lucky enough to find my host online, on MSN, so he could investigate right away.

After a few minutes he figured out which IP the DOS attack (because that's what this was), was coming from and banned the IP from the server. We both then spent the rest of the entire morning tracking things down and figuring out what happened. An email was sent to the abuse team at the relevant ISP immediately.

Then one of the Admin team here figured out that the IP the attack was coming from belonged to a forum member who had just signed up the day before - VeLocityChaos.

VeLocityChaos then started sending me a barrage of PM's protesting his innocence. So more time was wasted verifying that it was his computer launching the attack.

All the time this was going on, I was supposed to be coding a new section for the site, and then spending some quality family time.

So, although it took some bottle to make the post finally admitting his guilt, let's look at the damage here.

By launching this crazy attack on the server

1. I lost about 5 hours of my day

2. My webhost and his subcontractor technician spent 5 hours on it directly and a heap more indirectly

3. We were moved to an entirely new server as a result - you can imagine the man hours in that

4. A direct knock on effect was the setup of 4 new servers at the data centre

5. Gigabyte$$$ of bandwidth used up. More used in that one morning than most websites use in a month.

6. Moderator overtime on the forums removing all the duplicate posts that happened as people tried in frustration to make posts in the face of all the errors.

Hard cost? Over £1000 of technician time spent working on servers, plus the bandwidth bill.

I don't think I need to spell out how mad I am right now.

Rocky, words cant describe how bad I feel right now about this. I know this doesnt make any difference to what happened. But, if I knew what the outcome of my actions would have been. I would not have done this. The donation page isnt working for me. I would like to start at least helping with the damages I cost by trying to give you guys so much a month. Again, Rocky Im terribly sorry. I wouldnt even be here typing this if I wasnt.

If it isn't working, go to paypal.com and login. Then just send some money to rocky@ghostrecon.net.

Job done.

It's not hard to imagine why people go to jail for this sort of mistake.

It was a particularly sad absence of judgement. I wonder how all of our lives would differ if more people knew that taking responsibility for one's actions works best when it takes place before the action, instead of after.
