Shadow Ops, Red Mercury

Recommended Posts

I don't know where to start on this one.

The AI are pretty predictable. They either hide behind a box, or charge right at you. Headshots will take them down with one hit, but I have had to make numerous torso shots to take an enemy down.

The graphics are mediocre, and the character animations are subpar at best. I saw many enemy that I shot slide on their feet to the edge of where they are standing and then simply fall in a standing position until they hit the ground.

The maps are very linear and VERY narrow. You operate in VERY small areas, and you can also often see the enemy spawn right in front of you.

Even on the most difficult level the game is weak. The best strategy I found was to toss a grenade into an area where there are enemy, and then run in and blast away. Keep shifting from side to side to avoid taking hits, and if you do there are health packs so minor injuries are not a problem. Be sure to stay away from the walls as the enemy will hit you with RPGs, so when you enter an area, all you have to really do is grenade, run in and pick off the sniper in the window or on the roof (there seems to always be one person "up" somewhere) then shoot up the rest of them.

Squad controls are nonexistent. I ignore them, and assume they won't help. Besides, once you pass a certain area, they often disappear.

I didn't finish the game as I was really bored with it.

Rainbow Six Lockdown was also a disappointment, but I still took the time to finish that one. Despite the issues it had, RB6LD stll had a polished feel to it that Shadow Ops lacks.

Try it out if you want, but the $9 I spent on a used copy was even too much IMO.

Yeh I have been playing it on the PC and love it. If you start to over analyse it I guess you could find fault with it, but now I have completed Lockdown I really can't wait to get stuck back into Shadow Ops.

As this is the "Console Corner," and knowing jchung, I will venture to guess that it is the xBox version.

Rocky, what did you like about it and can you speak to some of jchung's critcisms?

Reading Hatchforce's also positive review (although I don't know if it was PC or xBox specific), he gave kudos to the cutscenes saying they were the best he had seen (not a direct quote) ... as big as I am on ambience, that almost got me to buy it until I heard from the chungster.

Hmm, PC version. I wouldn't want to draw any comparisons as I did not run it on a PC. Maybe Rocky and Hatchet are having a very different experience as cross platform titles can vary significantly depending on which version you run.

Maybe I should say that Hatchet and Rocky's PC experience is what people should count on and leave the Xbox version out of it.

Also, even though I did not particularly like Lockdown, I still finished the game. Despite the faults I saw in the game, I still have to say that Lockdown did have a "quality" feel to it that Red Mercury simply lacks IMO. Then again, Lockdown was done by UBI, so...

I look at a lot of UBI titles much like Halo. Some of them have some issues, but in the end you have to admit that you can tell time was put into making the game. Also, UBI titles often improve with each new version that hits the shelves. Not a whole lot of one hit wonders in the UBI line up.

jchung, are you running into the same problem I am and finding that there are really no good titles now or soon for the xBox? Sure, there's GR:AW but all evidence points to it being a lame port of the x360. No way I'm spending 50 bones on a compromise.

I always liked the NFS series ... maybe I'll trade in NFS2 and Shattered for NFS Most Wanted. It's too bad you don't like sports titles.

Well Ronin, it looks like a dry spell.

The sports titles are real nice, but I can't get into them. I have played organized sports for so long now that I can't tell you how many hours I have spent on the field. Running games on a console just seem like a poor substitute. Just my opinion, and how I personally feel about it.

I have raced my cars and bikes on tracks, so the racing games don't quite do it either.

I think I like the shooters because actual shooting is something I enjoy, and although I have shot countless numbers of rounds out of my guns, gone hunting with all kinds of weapons, combat is something I have never engaged in. I think I find the tacsims very interesting because that is what I have not done.

I don't like games like Doom, but games like GR, SC and OFP really interest me. Halo and Halo2 seem to be the only run and gun shooters that I like.
