problems launching gr

Recommended Posts

Ok, I have played gr for 2 years with no issues, now I am completely stuck. I just recently had to restore my windows on my pc. I deleted the old partition and made a new one--I have had to do this on other pcs before, so I know what I am doing. I reinstalled gr with new disks that I just got--Ghost Recon Gold Edition--and it will not launch. I have windows xp pro with all the microsoft updates--except sp2, because of other issues that i have always had with that service pack, and have always been able to run gr without it, as it does not require that update to play. now when i launch, it goes straight to a windows error page saying that gr has encountered a problem and has to close. i have un-installed and re-installed this numerous times, and re-done the 1.4 patch, and done eveything i can think of, and it has not fixed it. it is not my video or my sound card, and is not my version of the game or windows. anyone with any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks---demon

Since repartitioning, if you have attempted to install the Gold Edition more then once, I'd do a clean uninstall of GR. Follow the instructions in Specter's guide to the letter.

How to uninstall GR properly

http://www.ghostrecon.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=11277

After uninstalling:

Make sure your computer has at least DirectX 8.1( you probably have some version already, just make sure it is at least 8.1 as this is necessary to play GR, and it's not strictly for online play. I think if your version is less then 8.1, you can install 8.1 off the GR Gold Edition)

To see what version of Direct X you have:

Go to windows start; click 'Run'and type dxdiag in the box and click ok

It is the last entry on the first page.

If you aren't going to install the UBI Game Service

-disable your Anti Virus and turn off any other programs that are running.

-install disc one

-reboot

-install disc two

-reboot

GR Gold Edition requires no patches as it installs them all thru 1.4.

At least the North American version does.

If your video card is two years old or less DirectX 9.0c probably won't hurt.

Download 9.0c here:

It sounds crazy, but like Kurtz says, update both video and sound device drivers. A good deal of issues have been solved doing only this.

Yes, SP2 is not necessary to play GR.

Look for a page entitled "I Can't Play"

Not sure if you got the problem fixed or not yet. I can suggest a few possible problems that I have run into b4 in the past.

1) If you have installed a "[Thing that should not be spoken of here IAW Forum Rule 3.7]" crack, there are many garbage ones out there that just don't work.

2) If you haven't installed a crack, and are starting from a CD, the CD has to be in the drive that you installed the game from.

3) There are some mods that messed up my GR so it wouldn't start. I made a shortcut on my desktop to \Red Storm Entertainment\Ghost Recon\modsset.txt (depending on where you have installed GR). This text file controls which mods are activated when GR starts. The basic ones that should show are "GR" , "DS" and "IT". If there are others shown, delete those lines. You could also delete the lines with "DS" and "IT" just to eliminate those are possible problems with it starting.

4) Your vid card may be ok, but the drivers may be not compatible. I have had times when I installed the latest driver, and GR wouldn't start with that driver. I had to default back to the driver I had. Newer isn't always better, as some drivers have issues. I have found this Nvidia cards.

Best of Luck
