Dannik Posted February 5, 2006 Share Posted February 5, 2006 Samba allows non-Windows operating systems to access shared Windows directories. Installing Samba on Windows just doesn't make sense. Samba allows *nix (and a lot more) operating systems to communicate with Windows network shares. Dannik Posted February 5, 2006 Share Posted February 5, 2006 While I could probably provide a fairly simple tutorial, everyone's needs are different. Instead, here's an extensive tutorial on general networking practices using XP Pro. Oh, and SMB is a compatability application, and not a networking tool, per se. It only allows non Windows machines to 'see' Windows network shares. Basically, it's an emulator to allow 3rd parties to authenticate to Windows based file shares. EDIT: For a lower security, but simpler walk through, check this tutorial out. More suitable for a home network, while the first one is meant more for commercial/high security use. Dannik Posted February 5, 2006 Share Posted February 5, 2006 A Samba Share is nothing more than a shared directory on a Windows machine, that is being accessed by a NON Windows computer via the use of Samba software. It's just a shared directory, and Samba allows you to access it via a non-Windows machine, by installing Samba on said non-Windows machine. To put it in a different way: It's only a Samba Share when you are accessing a Windows native shared folder, from a non-Windows machine, using Samba ON said non-Windows machine. If it's all Windows, it's just a simple shared folder. If you have a purely Windows network, then completely forget the word Samba. It's not relevant to your situation, and is only adding to the confusion. What it sounds like you want to set up is a simple file sharing network, locally. Dannik Posted February 5, 2006 Share Posted February 5, 2006 You're killing me here! What OS is on your modded Xbox? I assume it's a Linux distro. If so, you would need to install Samba (or config, if it's part of your modded OS) on the Xbox, so it can access the normal Windows shared folder(s). To be fair, I've not configured Samba, only used it in the past. That being said, once your Windows PC has an open share (as per the tutorial) you would be able to tell Samba on the Xbox to find the share via the default path stated (no promises, as it can get rather complex) as long as both computers are in the same Workgroup. That's what I needed to hear! I just got it working. I have Xbox Media Center on my Xbox and it has a Samba client pre-configured. Thanks!
