No, it's not Xbox-centric. Ubisoft simply makes a profile slot available for those folks who do play via the Live! service. Xbox Gamertags are about as ubiquitous as an MSN ID or ICQ number. Not everyone has one, but a lot of people do.

Anyway, it doesn't matter what your platform of choice is, to participate and get free stuff (if you're in North America only, at least so far) while potentially getting your eyes on new media before the general public does.

At least, that's the theory.

Ruin, this is just an extension of Ubisoft's long standing viral marketing fanclub projects. Kimi used to run Team Shadownet, which was for Splinter Cell Chaos Theory's launch. It too closed shortly after the game shipped.

It's all about the ramp up. Once the game has been on shelves for a couple of weeks, no amount of marketing in the traditional sense, will increase sales. From that point, it's sites like GR.net and the more mainstream folks like GameSpy that will determine post-launch sales figures.

GR Unit isn't a 'real' fan site, in the classic sense; it's a well tuned PR machine, rewarding everyday folks for their enthusiasm.
