Im so confused  Is this card better than the 4600? I just see this card around for like $200 bucks and i still see the 4600 for $300, so whats the deal?!? Is this card worth a buy? I was looking at the benchmarks over at toms hardware and on most of the tests show that it can hang pretty well....anyway im just curious

Heres the link to the benchmarks over at Toms Hardware :D

The difference between the 4600 and the 4800 is that the later is at AGP 8X Transfer Rate. Same core, same memory, same stuff...just an excuse to get more money through a release of the 8X version.

If you want an 8X card, I'd opt for a 9700Pro. The core and memory are even better than the 4600. Otherwise, I'd wait for the 4600 to come down it price, and it will, after the FX is released.

About Tom's, just be careful what you believe...that's all I'm going to say. ;)

That's an understatement :D

The 9700s should be cheap when the 9800 arrives this month and in April, so hold tight.

I just didnt think that going ATI is a good idea.... I mean i know its a great performing card and all ive just heard a lot of stories about driver issuse, and thats something that would bug the crap out of me! Where as i know nvidia drivers are solid and i would never have to worry about a game not being compatible!! Anyway im just looking for something to spend my big income tax return on. :D

Of course, you'd need a motherboard with an 8x AGP slot to take full advantage of the card. I think most new motherboards still only have up to 4x slots. But, I think you can use an 8x card in a 4x slot, the card will throttle itself back a little.

My next vid card will either be an 9700PRO or a *cough-9800PRO w/256MB Ram-cough*. That one is also 8X. :)

And yes, Stinger is right about the 8X not being fully utillized. However, MOST boards released within the past 3 or so months are 8X enabled.

After AGP8x comes the new PCI bus, which is actually faster/more bandwidth than current AGP slots. So who knows... in the next few years, AGP cards maybe a thing of the past and we'll all be back to using PCI cards :P

Fire_Wire, I believe both are about equal on driver stability. People have problems with both, people have success with both. As for me, I have success; not one driver stability problem to this date.

Now, early 9700Pro cards made by Ati had problems with 8x AGP slots cause mobo manufacturers a.k.a. VIA, didn't follow specs for the 8x AGP like they were supposed to. But any purchase made today, NIB, should net one of the latter revisions and you'll be fine.

8x works in 4x AGP slots, barely any performance loss. If you can notice it, you must be special.

Have a look at my signature for rough sys specs......

Anyway, the board and card listed both run at AGP x8 and it recently benchmarked with 3DMark 2001 Pro at 13,657 and stunned the hell outta me!! Admittedly that was with a couple of settings tweaked down but only a couple, if I whack them all right up then it scores around 12,800 everytime :)! No complaints here lol :)!

I was used to averaging about 4000 on an Elsa Gladiac Ti516 64mb at AGP x4 also using 3DMark 2001 Pro, so the difference is certainly worth the change and the 4800 is ultimately gonna be better than the 4200 too (or at least it should be depending on ya system anyway lol) :)!
