RatoN
Hello guys, i’m looking for a prog. that will allow me and my buddies to exchange large files over the Internet quickly. From IP address to IP address. Ex: Map pack that I want to send to a friend (200mb) Any suggestions
WhiteKnight77
ICQ, other than that, set up an FTP server on your system or upload it to your website if you have the room to do so, it will take you a bit to upload it, but he can download it faster. I used ICQ to send Rocky 500+ MB files in the past, took about 7 hours IIRC.
CR6
If you are running Windows XP and don't have ICQ installed, you can use Windows/MSN Messenger. I personally prefer the FTP method myself.

Dannik
Do you know a good FTP server prog? ← Why yes, yes I do.
CrowmanUK
I'd definitely use the ftp method, nothing worse than sending files through msn and getting halfway through and you get logged out and have to start again, with ftp you should be able to resume downloads if you lose the connection. The best DL speed I could achieve with Polaris mIRC was 60kbs. So FTP is the only option for sharing large files on the Internet. Do you know a good FTP server prog? ← Why yes, yes I do. ← Yes, this one looks great Dannik Do I also need a client to go with the server? Or can I use the server as a client? In other words when two people exchange files, does one have to be a client? Or can they both use the servers to exchange back and forth? And what ports should I open on my routers? 21, 22, .. Dannik
Do I also need a client to go with the server? Yes, but pretty much every web browser out there supports FTP connections. In other words, everyone already has a suitable client. For an example, check out Ubisoft's public FTP server. And what ports should I open on my routers? 21, 22, ..← For standard FTP traffic, port 21. If you are using SSH/SFTP (encrypted traffic), it's port 22. Assuming you don't need to encrypt, just port 21 should be just fine.

Dannik
I'm not certain as to what the issue is, as I don't use the software in question, but I just installed it to see if I could determine the issue. When you install it, it creates a 'default' profile, giving anonymous access to the folder 'c:/ftproot'. Perhaps you should put your assets there? EDIT: Or, from the Configuration -> User Manager dialogue, create a new folder path in the lower half of the screen, to point to the local folder in question? FURTHER EDIT: I managed to get a third party user to connect to my shared FTP folder. Took a bit of firewall tweaking and user editing, but it's not complex. Drop me a note, preferably via the IM service of your choice (check profile for options) and I'll see if I can get you set up.
CrowmanUK
One of the easiest ways is if you're using the ftp server, make an account for your mate and give him access to the folder that the file is in, then when he logs in with that user/pass he's straight at the file. I wouldnt allow anonymous access to your ftp server at all mate.
RatoN
k Crow, even if I’m not nervous about hackers, that sounds like the wise thing to do. i’m working on it right now with Dannik and it seems to work. in the help file they never told me to open certain ports on my routers. No wonder nobody could connect.
firefly2442
The filezilla FTP server is pretty good too. Just another alternative.
Specter
They probably assume that if you are setting up an FTP server, that you know about port assignments and such things. Alot of these banana head software writers are really good about assuming that everyone knows everything, and not making detailed, easy to follow directions. I guess it's some kind of super geek code that you can't make your stuff easy to use. Edited January 9, 2006 by Specter
RatoN
Hey firefly, can you use Internet Explorer or Firefox as a client with filezilla? Or do you have to use a real FTP client to access the filezilla FTP server? I seem to have problems browsing the FTP server I’m using now with IE and FF.
firefly2442
Yep, should be able to. I've had no problems browsing FTP servers with IE or FF. The only problem is that IE does NOT support symbolic links, something that Linux uses. So if you have a symbolic link (kind of like a shortcut... in a way) to another folder on a Linux FTP server, it won't work with IE. However, there are lots of freeware FTP clients available for Windows, and of course loads of great ones for Linux. edit: Plus, with FTP you should be able to have resumable downloads so in case you get disconnected you can resume it. It might depend on the client though. I don't think IE supports resumes but I think Firefox does... Dannik
I've been working with RatoN, and with a standalone FTP client (WS_FTP Pro) I can easily connect. Using the command line FTP app included with XP, I can easily connect. For some reason, any attempts via browser to connect do succesfully connect, in terms of logging in, but never return an actual file list. Hmm.. firefly2442
Passive file transfers? just a guess.... edit: Or maybe permissions are wrong? If you don't have access to do an "ls" to read what is in the directory.... Edited January 9, 2006 by firefly2442
RatoN
Firefly, do you have a filezilla server setup on your machine? If so, can I have your settings please. No body can see the directory from IE, it says; Connection timed out, but I can see them login in. They probably assume that if you are setting up an FTP server, that you know about port assignments and such things. RatoN
Many Thanks to Dannik, everything works, finally. TheRaccoonTradingCo is fully operational! And to everybody in this thread, you have been very helpful, ty again! The only problem is the speed, 80kbs when I was expecting min 300kbs… gonna have to do something bout that …but that’s another story. CrowmanUK
I used to get low connection speeds that I couldnt explain either mate, the only solution was to multirar the file and have a couple of connections and get 3 or 4 parts at the same time, they'd all come down at 80ish then.
