Help with M08, Zebra Straw

Hey all. I think I've run into the first mission that I just can't do. This is the one where you follow the tank. I can't seem to clear the village without a) losing my tank and/or b) losing my men. There are just too many tangos and too much fire power.

Here's my current plan of attack:

I send Team A East to come up to the church from the south. I have them take out the 3 guys at the church, then head a bit east to take out the 3-4 tangos that are out in the field.

I send Team B to where my tank is coming and have them lay some fire on the tangos that are near the first enemy tank that my tank will shoot. Then, all hell breaks loose. If I concentrate on Team A, I usually take out all the tangos but my tank gets destroyed. If I concetrate on team B, then usually someone in my team A gets killed.

Obviously I'm approaching this mission wrong but I'm not sure what to do. There are just TOOOOO many tangos to deal with. Any suggestions?

Im not saying this is right or anything but this is how I do it

I do pretty much every thing with A (usually has Will Jacobs Nigel Tunney and another specialist) I keep B in reserve keeping them back behind but have them do something but anyway just move into town on the side of the road you start on and clear those buildings first and you can shoot across the road at the ones in the houses the guys with AT are either on your side of the road in the houses, on the other side of the road in the houses, or down past the village

(disclaimer I am not responsible for you getting killed if you use my tactics)

Seems I was trying to be too smart by half. Instead of trying to flank the church, I just sent all my guys in behind the tank. The tank got destroyed but I was able to complete the mission. That's good enough for me :)

I usually bring as many grenades as possible (OICW's help) and frag every nook and cranny of the village to wipe out the A/T's. This is the only way I've been able to consistently keep my team and the tank alive.

Though I usually don't risk my men for the tank.... I know it's not nice, but after a while of trying to beat the mission, I said to myself "y'know, I don't think I want to lose a whole team of veteran Ghosts because some damn tank can't wait another 5 minutes while I clear the village".

Heh. Amen to that! If the damn tank would just wait a couple more minutes, that mission would have been much easier :)

As to not getting the specialist....well, considering I didn't even know I got specialists until last night, its no big loss if I don't get this one. :)

You think that is bad I played through the first 13 missions and had no idea there were specialists (probably should have read the book) I had some really good regular soldiers

Sadly, to win this mission, with minimal loss of life from your operatives and suceed in your x objective is that you have to practically memorize who has AT rockets (so you can zap them, and them only) Take out the guy with the AT rocket behind the first tank on the north side (the tank that your tank usually destroys.) Then head east and take out the second man with the AT rocket. (he's in the small house to the s-east of the village). Once you do that, bug the f-ck out and just wait for the tank to plow through the town. There will be no enemy equipped with anti-tank rockets to destroy your tank. The US soldiers following the tank are going to get mowed down, but there's nothing you can do for them. Darwin will sort them all out.

This mission, I think exemplifies the misgivings of GR team AI against enemy AI. Considering who you've got and what they can do, the mission puts waaaaay too much on your plate.

An interesting way to do this mission on elite, after you survive the initial onslaught, is to take a sniper or rifleman with a suppressed weapon and go around the map all the way along the left. Do not destroy the artillery or go near the Russian tank that gets bombed. That will start the friendly tank moving. You can kill the infantry and AT guy at the Russian tank across from the church. Keep going all the way around the left side and kill all the patrols. There are only two AT guys left - one in the bombed out house next to the church and one across the street. Kill them and the allied tank cannot be stopped. it will take out the Russian tank. You can move back and use all your team to clear the village at your leisure and mission over.

I heard about this.

I've never managed to do it though. <_<

Thanks.

About Gordon: You guys are right. Your original infantry is way better at that stage. (sept leadership)

This mission is one of the Three. The three that cause so much stress! Why defend an MA1 Abrams that has infantry escort with highly trained/expensive SOP guys? Well anyway - I send a 3 man Alpha across the road and turn their cover arc towards the area occupied by the enemy tank, Bravo (2) goes to the wall by the air support destroyed tank and waits for Charlie to move out near the rock and waste the guys around the church? Alpha will be engaged heavily, just keep trying till they survive. Charlie moves up to a wall along the road and grenades the village ahead after shooting an obvious tango on his left flank at 10 o'clock, he'll get the AT guy up the road, may have to get the one across the road if Alpha does not. This is stressful for Charlie, stick with him. Bravo must move up to the right flank at the right time and cover arc the village for Charlie to live, Bravo may want to die alot too, but will find AI if u give em a chance. The armor rolls thru, soldiers may kill a few for u, then u get to the business of killin everybody. I used to go around the edge of the map with a sniper and the whole platoon, that is one of my tatics throughout GR, I'm an edgey guy!, but it feels good to get thru like this too, u can keep Buzz. BTW, Stone Bell and Fever Claw drove me nuts too, 'til I got smart. Now they just %@#$ me off!

migryder
