I put in a new video card in my computer. And the game started fine the first time but it keeps on saying GhostRecon has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. and I copyed some thing from that (GHOSTRECON caused an invalid page fault in

module GHOSTRECON.EXE at 0197:00515e39.

P.S. I don't know what kind of video card I have. Because I had my uncle put it in. I told him that my game was slowing up a bit when I played and he said that it might be my video card so he let me use his old one. So I could really use the help. :lightning:

You need to download, install and run freeware program: "DriverCleanerPro" from http://www.driverheaven.net.

Secondly you download from http://www.nvidia.com the driver version 40.72 from their driver archive. That's an WHQL version that supports Win98.

Once DriverCleaner has removed old entries, you can install the new driver.

Make sure you have no other programs running in the background when you'rte gaming as it slows down the system and run "AdAware" or "SpyBot" or both to remove any spyware.

After all that's done, run a defrag.

You also should not be running Directx9.0xxx with Windows 98. They really aren't compatible. Should be running DirectX 8.1.

Unfortunately, the only way to correct this issue with DirectX is to Format, and re-install Winblows. DirectX really can't be uninstalled from 98. It's married to the kernel.

Also, that is an Nvidia GeForce 4/MX400. It probably has 64MB of RAM on it.

The Nvidia driver version I would use on your system would be the 29.42's, but that is only if you choose to format and reload Windows98. IF this isn't the path you'll take, try the latest drivers from Nvidia.

IF the latest drivers don't work, your best course would be to Format and reload.

If you choose to do this, get in touch with me, and I have the DirectX version you need, and the drivers.

 Ok I used DirectX v8.1 for GR but it didn't work so my dad got v9.0 and it worked fine. I need to ask you some thing what do you mean by reload Windows 98? But I'll think about getting in touch with you but I share this computer with my dad so I'll have to go over it with him. I'll show him what you said and we'll talk about it.

What I meant was, if you are still having issues, you may want to format your drive(erase it), and re-install Windows 98. Then update DirectXto 8.1, and your Nvidia drivers to 29.42.

The reason is this: You can't uninstall DirectX successfully from 98. It's married to the kernel(the brain of the OS), and will cause all manner of FUBAR if you try to uninstall it, so formatting is the fastest, quickest way to fix the issue.

The DirectX9.0xxx wasn't written for Windows9xxx or ME, which is based on 9xxx. It was written for WindowsXP and Win2K. It's a crap shoot whether it works with 9xxx or not. It works for some. For most it just screws everything all to you know where.

Also, that card won't utilize DirectX 9.0xxx. It will force DX9.xxx to act like 8.1 anyway, because that card can't take advantage of the extra goodies in DX9.xxx.

Windows 9.x is real finicky about having it's core components messed with(IE. uninstalling things like IE and DirectX).

IF you keep having trouble, that will be about the only time efficient fix, not to mention the best way.

And if it comes to that, you may want to partition that drive so Winblows is on it's own partition by itself. That way if things go FUBAR with 98, all your data and apps are safe and sound on another partition.

If ya have any questions, or more trouble, let me know.

Your issue before with 8.1 was htat you were using the latest and greatest Nvidia drivers with an older version of DirectX, and the drivers didn't like it. They turned their nose up at the old DirectX.

That is most likely(95%)the cause of your issue.

Updating is not always a good thing.

 so like you say updataing is not a good thing I thought it was? And so the DirectX v9.0 that I have might be the cause of my problem so that means I most delete it right and is there a way to delete it with not formating my computer

No.

What I said was, updating was not ALWAYS a good thing.

It's important to research your updates before diving into them headlong, unless you're one of the few that does that just for fun, and to tear updates apart to see how they work like I do.
