JoshuaOneSix 0
Great Forum for a great game! In the past, I've played through all games and most of the available mods. Used various weapon mods and complete conversions. Never had any problem until recently... What follows are the options I've tried and results. Short Game History 1. All playing/game time has been on the same system. 2. Currently use Circle Virtual CD (program creates an HVD image of the disk which can then be loaded on a virtual drive). Circle Virtual CD allows play without manually inserting your disk into your D drive but instead loading the .HVD image into a 'virtual' drive. 3. Have used Circle Virtual CD for a long time (on other games also) with excellent results. Have used it in the past to play GR/IT/DS and mods with no problems. 4. Had not played GR in about a year but decided to get reaquainted with it again. 5. This is the Gold Edition CD so it contains all patches. 6. Other games play fine (mainly Starcraft Brood War) 7. Did NOT have this problem in the past. 8. PC is well maintained through Norton Utilities (Defrags and WinDoctor, CCleaner, Avast Antivirus, Lavasoft AdAware, Spybot, FreeRamXP, and the occasional visit to PC Pitstop. Current Issues 1. Game freezes within a few seconds of play. After a few seconds the game frees up only to repeat the freeze/unfreeze routine again. When the game is playing I DO get some tear effect. Different Repairs Attempted 1. Complete uninstall of game (including ALL mods, saved games , folders, etc...) 2. New reinstall w/o using Circle Virtual CD. No Change! 3. Complete uninstall of game. 4. New reinstall using Circle Virtual CD. No Change! **** Have not spent the time to reinstall any type of Mods until problem is solved**** 5. Change ALL options in game to lowest available setting (including resolution, detail, shadows, effects, etc...). No Change! 6. Tweak all Windows settings and other settings as described in the "Tweaking XP for GR" pinned topic. No change! 7. Changed Option.XML files to play GR in window instead of full screen. No Change! 8. Followed the various suggestions for resolutions found in the post "Ghost Recon freezes?, XP SP2 and DirectX9.0c screwing my game?". No change! 9. Adjusted refresh rates on moniter to various settings. No Change! Conclusion 1. It ain't fixed and I don't know what to try next!!! 2. Colin 0
Hi. I take it the game played ok when you decided to revisit it??? If yes what actions have you taken between game being ok and game not being ok. Colin
JoshuaOneSix 0
No Change! Hadn't played GR in over a year. Problem began with first revisit (about a week ago). Still had all orig. saved games and mods. Again, this is a well maintained comp. and the same comp. I played on before. BTW... So as not to get conflicting reports... After each repair/change that didn't work, I went back to original settings before trying something different. Edited November 20, 2005 by JoshuaOneSix
WhiteKnight77 1
While GR will run on that card, you may want to turn in game settings down to a resolution of 800x640 and make sure Vsynch is enabled in the video cards drivers. Are you trying to run at high detail with shadows? If so, drop down to medium settings and turn shadows off. See what happens. Also, make sure a much background processes are turned off as possible and that will allow your PC to still run.
GreyHaired 0
Try to uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your graphic cards, possibly an upgrade through Windows Update. Alternatively install the Omega drivers. Use "DriverCleaner" from http://www.driverheaven.net to remove the old drivers if you decide to do so.
JoshuaOneSix 0
While GR will run on that card, you may want to turn in game settings down to a resolution of 800x640 and make sure Vsynch is enabled in the video cards drivers. Are you trying to run at high detail with shadows? If so, drop down to medium settings and turn shadows off. See what happens. Also, make sure a much background processes are turned off as possible and that will allow your PC to still run. ← Vsynch is enabled. One of the things I've tried is to run GR in a window and at the same time have task manager open. This has shown me a couple of things... 1. Processes typically use 1 - 3% of CPU usage (without GR running) 2. When GR is running CPU usage jumps up to a minimum 50% usage - then freezes when it hits 95 - 97% usage I ran PC Pitstop check up and found that the uncached speed for my main hard drive is 11 Mps (should be about 33 Mps). So my next experiment will be to uninstall GR from my main hard drive and reinstall it on my second hard drive (which is currently used only for music storage) Will let everyone know how this goes... Thanks for the suggestions so far... keep them coming as I will update on all results! JoshuaOneSix
JoshuaOneSix 0
Little bit more info on my system... Description Drive C Drive D Partition format FAT32 FAT32 Cluster size 32 KB 16 KB Drive label PRIMARY No Label Size 38192 MB 19075 MB Free space 22395 MB (59%) 3948 MB (21%) Junk files 34 MB (0%) 0 MB (0%) Data fragmentation 36% Not tested File fragmentation 1% Not tested Uncached speed 17 MB/s (54%) 35 MB/s (110%) My latest attempt was to Uninstall GR and reinstall unto Drive D. Still same problem. Still see frame tears and game freezes BTW... Tried playing first without having DS/IT installed then played after installing them but result is the same. I'll be taking the CD to a friend's house and have him install it on his system just to make sure the game disk is not corrupt...

Followed the various suggestions for resolutions found in the post "Ghost Recon freezes?, XP SP2 and DirectX9.0c screwing my game?". No change! Have already done the uninstall and reinstall of the latest driver for my graphic card. Please explain what is meant by "Alternatively install the Omega drivers." GreyHaired 0
It just looks strange to me that your dxdiag says the gfx driver is not WHQL certified and Windows XP should have installed a certified one. Omega: http://www.omegadrivers.net tweak both Nvidia and ATI drivers and come with some extra features. Including a checkbox for "application preference" for VSync. Newer Nvdia drivers have that option too. Edit: newer isn't always better when it comes to display drivers. Edit 2 (sorry, it's Monday...): Under: Display properties-Settings-Advanced-Monitor Check the box: "Hide modes this monitor cannot display" If modes over 60Hz are an option, choose one of those. With Vsync enabled, the refreshrate of your monitor does not exceed 60 when it's set to 60. This could be the reason for the hick-ups.

Will download the Omega Drivers when I get home tonight... 2. Box was already checked 3. Have already tried various refresh rates. 4. Some additional ideas have been suggested that I will be trying.. A. Clean internal parts (fans, etc...) The outside vents were cleaned last week but it's been awhile for the inside B. I'll have a friend install the games on his system just to make sure there are no problems with the disks. C. I'm going to borrow another video card and see if my MX 400 is maybe near the end of it's life. By the time I get through with this, I'll be ready to become a professional gaming consultant... Keep the suggestions coming as I'll be updating Edited November 21, 2005 by JoshuaOneSix
JoshuaOneSix 0
PROBLEM SOLVED!!!! Swapped out my video card (Geforce2 MX400) with friend from work for another Geforce2 MX400... NO MORE PROBLEMS I look at this as good news all around... 1. I finally have a definitive answer! It was even better that the replacement card I used happened to be the same model. This helps to let me know that everything else is in good shape. 2. This gives me an excuse to get a new (though still on a budget) video card. 3. I learned ALOT about different methodologies for dealing with gaming problems. 4. Although I lost all saved games (though I realize I could have still saved them) I can replay the game from the beginning. 5. I found a group of knowledgeable friends on our forum who offered great suggestions to try. Thanks to everyone for some excellent suggestions!
