calius 0
http://www.skype.com/ - Calls for free and all that, nothing new as regards messenger chat and all other forms like Teamspeak and comms software. My quesion is, has anyone used this for comms in games or use it for calling others, also whats the security on this software? Can people listen in? Im dubious at the best of times .. so I was just seeing if anyone was familiar with using it? Anyone?
nuttyknatty 0
I've used Skype a couple of times - seems ok but I had quite alot of echo. Not sure if that was the software, my budget pc or my connection. Not having a headset made the experience feel a little odd but I thought it was definitely usable. Free as well! magnumkp 0
It wouldn't really work for comms in games because you have to invite people to a conference call and it would be a pain. And for my setup it takes over my sound settings and messes some stuff up. For calls and stuff it is fine, if I'm working from home I call the people in the office on it to save my phone bill. Obviously the person you are calling must have Skype, (unlike SIP based alternatives were you can call on any platform) but it's at the top of the pile for voice over ip stuff so most people will have. Dannik 43
I frequently listen to an internet radio show, where the two hosts live about fifty miles from each other, and use Skype to connect, and Shoutcast to host. Apart from the rare technical difficulties they experience, it's virtually impossible to tell that they aren't hosting from the same room.
magnumkp 0
Sorry Noraf, I meant for free calls they both had to be on Skype.
dickie 0
I've used it on GR a few times on my Mac (a now-aging iMac G4 800Mhz!) and it made GR quite laggy, since I've switched to TeamSpeex (the mac port of TS) I've had no troubles with lag at all.

BlueRose_76 0
Now here another nice use of Skype: I once met this clever guy, he has a PDA with mic + windows mobile (or somesort) with wifi card and skype installed. Now he logs in into an open wifi networks in the city and could make skype calls for free from anywhere there is open wifi available. T_1 0
If someone wants to listen in on me telling my brother that my son has puked on the carpet, smashed a vase, or poked me in the eye, go ahead. In fact if they email me I'll tell them myself. It works for me.

Mrs Rocky got a scratched eyeball thanks to our 3 year olds razor sharp nails, that was a fun visit to the hospital, not.
