Dick Splash 23
P4 1.6GB. Should I double the memory and if so will the board [Abit] support it? DS
Stinger 0
That depends on what type of memory (DDR, SDR and what PC number), and I doubt you would notice a difference unless you are running high end prgrms in the background while playing. I have 512 DDR and can run things out the yin yang and still have loads free. So basically not on your system. Edited March 13, 2003 by Stinger
Dick Splash 23
Thanks mate. I'm sure it's DDR. I've now just got to improve my gameplay
connie lingus 0
Greetings, Yes, I certainly do think that memory improves the game! For instance, it helps to remember where you were on the map when you were killed last, and which way the the shots came from for your next spawn. Yes memory sure does help. I strongly recommend taking Ginko Biloba to improve your memory.
Dark Ranger 0
Here is the skinny: Doubling your system memory will not really improve the performance of your game. Why? Because games and multimedia rely primarily on the Graphics Card in your PC. Say you have a 32MB GFX card, using AGP 4X transfer: If your Core processor on the GFX is slow and your Memory MHz is slow, it will lag the game cause of the high graphic textures it is required to render. So once it runs out of memory resources, it will tap into System memory for texture storage. HOWEVER, the transfer rate from system memory to graphics card IS MARKEDLY SLOWER than transfer rate from Onboard GFX memory to the Core. Does that make sense. Your onboard memory transfer rates are usually in the double digits (obviously dependant upon your card) i.e. 11GB per second or 15GBs per second. From System memory, it will be much slower, only 2 or so Gigabites. This is the solution for better graphics in game play: BUY A BETTER VIDEO CARD. One with at least 64MB of memory, preferably 128. I can give you a few cards that I recommend, but that is up to you. You can still double your system memory if you want, but your DDR memory is better for applications, Word Docs, etc. Technically, you really do not need more than 512MB, especially with the newer PC 3200 or 3500 speed. If you keep alot of apps open in the backround, edit multiple pictures simultaniously, or render video, it would help. Purchasing a better video card will also improve your entire system performance, because it will no longer be the bottleneck of your computer. Hope this helps.
GP_Joltin_Joe 0
IMHO, 512 should be good. It's easy to get carried away with that stuff these days because the new computers are getting bigger so quickly. My game runs fine on 256MB SDRAM on my PC I bought in 1998 Yes, the game takes longer than normal to start on my PII450/256MB RAM, but once it gets going it seems to me. By the way, if you can convert internet years to people years, my PC must be getting pretty elderly by now, huh?
Xian Saint 0
I'd have to agree with Dark Ranger... RAM can up to a point definitely enhance your game playing experience...but once you get to a relatively high limit...which 512MB surely is...then you don't see that much of an overall increase in performance... At that point, you really have to look at the other components and where the limiting factor may be... (i.e. graphics card etc) And always remember...that although the game may run faster with every upgrade...chances are you won't "humanly" notice the difference...performance monitoring software can tell you FPS etc...but chances are with little upgrades like that...you won't actually "see" a difference... If you're at 512...I wouldn't necessarily upgrade that part of your computer...heck I run 512MB PC133 (yah the old stuff) on an old PIII 1G and because of the way I have the system tweaked...it runs fine... My two cents...free of charge...
Rocky 1,224
Here is the skinny: Did you copy/paste all that off a hardware site? Man, I got a sore head trying to understand it.
Dark Ranger 0
Did you copy/paste all that off a hardware site? Man, I got a sore head trying to understand it. No I did not. Why would I do that? It just comes from working with computers for a while.
ghost gamer 0
I have an hp...one gig cpu, 512 mb memory, 64 mb geforce mx 420 video card and a pci 512 sound card... I run all setting on high...no shadows...no bullet holes...at 800x32 res......I run ms config and shutdown all the crap programs that load at start up...which gets my system resources to 99% free....GR runs fine...no choppiness or lag....I just got battlefield 1942...run with all settings on high...once in while I run into a little choppiness...not bad for my old rig....I dunno...more always seems good to me!!!!
