well I finally upgraded Me to 2000 the other day and now a ton of hardware doesnt work. Including my modem. I tried searching for some time for the drivers but with now luck.

Im really considering pulling up the recovery disk and just getting Me back on. At least then everything will work.

I guess the reason why im posting this is too ask if any of you computer savvy guys would be willing to possibly chat with me and help me out a bit, I would be extremely grateful.

thanks

After reading your post, I'm glad I choose XP pro instead of 2000.

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

The only problem I ran into with my upgrade from ME was getting the printer back online.

Good luck getting back to game ready status, good thing you're with this bunch, I know these guys can help you.

First off, I have to ask a few questions to Hotpants :

1. Is your computer a pre-fab (pre-built) system or did you build it yourself?

2. What Operating System was ORIGINALLY installed in your computer?

3. What hardware (exactly) do you own? PCI, Hard drives, External USB devices, etc. I already know you have a modem.

We'll figure these out, then I'll do my best to help ya out. (If anybody else wants to jump in and help, I'd be greatful to. ;) )

Let me get this straight: you UPGRADED it? you didn't wipe out your HD first?

That's what I have always done. I have NEVER upgraded it. The upgrades have a lot of problems sometimes.

I have Win2k and everything works on my end. In fact I hated ME because nothing worked with it and it crashed all the time. I had Win2k for the past 2 years and never had a glitch (that wasn't caused by my stupidity that is).

A lot depends on you hardware and what componentes are giving you problems. There's plenty of computer savvy guys around here. Post your questions here and if I can't help there's a good chance that someone else will.

Yes, this is exactly what I was referring to. For example: Say your original OS was Win 98SE, and you upgraded to 2000Pro. Well, your core directories and file system settings will be upgraded to the new OS, however your drivers for hardware will remain! These WILL cause conflicts. It would have been better to uninstall ALL drivers for your hardware and to manually remove the cards etc before 2000 installation. Then, d/l the proper drivers and reinstall the hardware. I CAN ALMOST GUARENTEE YOU THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM. Drivers for 98 are different than for ME than those for 2000 etc.

I'm running 2000Pro as well, but I reformatted my HDD instead of Upgrading from 98SE. No problems at all.

I too am running Win2000 Pro and started with a clean install of everything and haven't had a problem. You may want to think about reformatting and reinstalling everything from scratch. You system will run that much better.

well for starters I didnt have time to do a fresh install. I needed 2000 to get a program to work for a design project.

The computer is my girlfriends. Its a compg presario 5000 with all original factory hardware. The original system was Me on the comp.

The main things that dont work is the modem and the sound card. What gets on my nerves is that when she got the computer, it boasted how it was built for both Me and 2000 pro.

What type of modem (company) and what type of sound card (brand and model)? After we get this we can have you right click My Computer, then click on Properties, then go to the Hardware tab then click on Device Manager. Then go to Sound and right click and go to its properties, then go to the driver tab and uninstall the drivers then install the new ones we'll have you download.

The main thing is: If you didn't build it or it didn't come with it preinstalled, forget about messing with it. Prefab pc's are a pain to change anything on, the software/hardware is extremely limited and will only lead to heartaches.

Least you could do is reinstall it properly. It doesnt take but a fraction of one day, but it's better than the constant crashes and problems you'll have out of it till then.
