Meet Your Maker

Welcome to the Ghost Recon.net Design Contest® (GDC). The GDC has been structured to test your creative and technical design skills to the utmost. In addition to being subject to various themes, contests will fall under various classifications including signatures, wallpapers, and logos, to name a few. The contest is open to any and all Ghost Recon.net registered members. Make no mistake, each contest will be difficult and winning a coveted GDC Award® will be no mean feat. However, let it be clear that the contest awards creativity – one need not a degree in Photoshop to be recognized here.

Got Bling?

Anyone can be ‘on topic’ and ‘original’ ... but not everyone can boast that design bling that sets visual brilliance apart from the mundane pack. With that said, all the ‘grunge’ brush strokes and Flash pizzazz in the world would not stand a chance at the GDC – that closet Van Gogh using nothing more than MS Paint and an eye for creativity, however, will.

In addition to the usual criteria which dominate typical design contests, a Design Bling Multiplier® will be applied to determine your total score. Inversely, how quickly you submitted your entry will also count for or against you. Enter quickly and leave the creativity to chance ... or spend days scraping that bottomless can of design wup ass – choose wisely, young Padawan.

Specifically, your score will be determined as follows:

On Topic (0-5) – How creatively the theme was interpreted.

Utility (0-5) – How well the entry conforms to the given classification.

Originality (0-5) – How original the presentation of the entry is.

Complexity (0-5) – How much creative effort and technical skill was evident in the entry.

Palette (0-5) – How the entry effectively uses a color palette.

Speed – Bonus given for entries submitted quickly. Calculated as 14 minus the number of days elapsed since the start of the contest divided by 3 (rounded).

Core Score – the summation of the above criteria.

Design Bling Multiplier® (DBM) (1-5) – A factor reflecting the overall design awe of the entry. The Core Score is multiplied by (1 + DBM/2).

Did I mention there would be a minimum Total Score hurdle for each contest? In other words, there isn’t always necessarily a winner.

Jack and Master of All Trades

For each contest, a general theme will be provided which, at best, should serve as a guide. In other words, you are encouraged to be as creative as possible in interpreting the theme. A specific classification will also be provided. Your entry will be judged based on how well you conform to the classification through the Utility criteria. For example, a wallpaper should have sufficient room for icons. Ultimately, the format (static image versus animation) will be provided as well. A Static Image format requires the entry to have absolutely no animation. An Animation format will require the entry to have at least some component of animation. Note however that a Static Image could very well be rendered in Flash and an Animation could very well be an animated GIF. All Flash based work must be sent to the.ronin to verify size.

May You Be Swift & Accurate

GDC is generally a monthly contest. Each contest is to run 14 days upon announcement and ending at 12.00 am GMT upon the 15th day. Judging will generally occur during the following 7 days and be announced within that timeframe. The next contest would be announced generally within 7 days following the announcement of winners from the prior contest. For example ...

Contest Start Date: September 1, 2005

Last Chance to Submit an Entry: September 15, 2005, 12.00 am GMT

Winner Announced: September 21, 2005

Next Contest Start Date: September 27, 2005

Please note the liberal use of the word ‘generally’ here, dear reader, and while all effort will be made to adhere to the timing, there can be no guarantees.

Make it Count

You have one shot. While you can modify submitted entries, be advised that the latest date of the modified entry will be reflected in the tally of your score, ergo, decreasing it. The contestant’s name does not have to be on the entry. Only one entry per contestant per contest will be considered, and entries may not be completely recycled from prior GDCs. C’mon, have some dignity, man.

Entries must be submitted by posting them on the respective contest thread with the word “ENTRY†and the contestant’s name clearly marked on that post. Members can submit entries on behalf of other members, but they must be clear who the actual contestant is. Date of submission used to tally an entry’s score will be the latest date marked on that post. This includes dates marked for editing posts so be sure not to edit a post unless it is to update or modify an entry.

There Can Be Only One

Given the difficulty of winning a GDC, truly deserving entries shall be blasphemed not by second or third place nor publicly chosen counterpart ‘winners.’ Like the Highlander, there can be only one. And to memorialize such an achievement, the winner of each contest will receive an official GDC sig module (to be hosted by them or Ghost Recon.net) which they can proudly wear anywhere they please. That is, of course, if there even is a winner.

The Three Pillars

Indeed, creativity should be shackled not. However, without some semblance of order, we would have anarchy. And anarchy sucks. Consider the following sins unto death ... or, equally painful, immediate disqualification.

1) Do not violate the size limitations – not by one pixel, not by 1 byte. When in doubt, err on the side of conservatism.

2) Static means static and animation means animation. If anything at all moves, it is not static. If nothing at all moves, it is not animation.

3) Under no circumstances will explicitly racial, derogatory, nor pornographic entries be considered.

Go Forth and Design

The GDC was meant to push the cacophony of design talent that lurks in these forums. It is not meant strictly for professional designers nor serial grunge sig creators – there is a plethora of places for that. In addition, we welcome your feedback and comments (posted here or sent to the.ronin) in an effort to make the GDC a better experience for all. The contest is run and designs are judged solely by the.ronin for the sake of expediency and accountability. All calculations of entry scores will be provided to the contestants at the close of each respective contest via private message.

Good luck ... you’ll need it.

No it does not ... just be sure that the post containing the entry is clear who the author is. :)

I want to make sure the concept of the Design Bling Multiplier (DBM) is clear ... it is a multiplicative factor applied to the Core Score. So for example:

Your entry is off-topic, entered late with a Core Score of 20 but entry has serious design mojo, a DBM max of 5 gives a total score = 20 * (1 + 5/2) = 70.

Your entry is on-topic, entered early, very original with a Core Score of 36 but just lacked that design gusto, a DBM min of 0 gives a total score = 36 * (1 + 0/2) = 36.

Essentially, the Design Bling Multiplier is just that - meant to award creativity above all else.

Yeah...You and mordred got me to go back in and add my name to my pick...it originally didnt have it there...but then I saw yours..and thought..well it is a SIG..I guess my name should go on it...

There goes points for originality....I just followed the leader...java script:emoticon :D

FYI...I am guessing since yours measured in at 489 X 104...that could be why your not in the OFFICIAL ENTRIES post.....Fix the size dude

That is an excellent point. Note that rules generally dictate one's name does not have to be on their work. However, the Utility criteria does judge based on how well the entry satisfies the given classification (i.e., sig).
