Have some questions abou edit poly

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. As you may or may not know, i have modelled probobly adozen or so weapons, all from spline extrusions. I honestly think that at least half of them look good. I watched a weapon modelling video on edit poly, and they showed how to make a weapon with edit poly. The person in the video had max 6 or 7, and with edit poly, he would go to edit poly then edge. Then he would select several edges, hold shift, and clone new polygons to the existing element. When i tried this with my max 4, i could not clone the edges. What happened, is instead of making new polygons, while holding shift and moving the edges, all that happened was the edges moved. I hope you know what im talking about and if you dont understand me please reply. I guess my question is: is there an easier way to make new polygons in max 4? I have been doing some work with edit poly, and what i had to do was clone verticies then use the create tool to get the polygon. Is there an easier way? THis is a real pain, and i think ill just stay at edit mesh if i cant figure this out. Surely someone models edit poly in max 4??

i edit poly in max 7 ....

I tried doing what you just said and its a no go.

The only ones that worked for cloning as an element were Vertex, Polygon, and Elelements.

Odd. I use it almost exclusively for basic modeling. I'm on Max 7.

In Epoly try selecting an edge and while holding down the shift key move that edge. Works pretty much exactly as selecting an edge and extruding it.

I use this teqnicue from time to time and for me it works both in Epoly and Emesh...could be because I'm on max 7.5 though.

This was already supported in v.5 of Max AFAIK. I'm not sure about v.4 though.

It's a pretty easy way to model aswell, working on a little side project here and I've more or less made this whole model through cloning edges, it started it's life as a 12 sided Ngon

About 4 hours into modelling and there are plenty of problems with the mesh that needs fixing. Getting kinda dense with mesh smooth though, looking at around 40 000 quads at the moment.

Nah, no scripts used at all...just plain old epoly modelling. Just got the fun part of trying to figure out how to attach the wings to the body ahead of me, aswell as getting the exhausts modelled. Might even have to put the turbines into the engines depending on what angle I'll do the final render in.

Quick wire of the low res cage, comes in at around 5000 polys at the moment.

And speaking of the final render...might just take a few months before I can show that. Only have 2 airframes, pilot models, carrier and environment to model, texture (colour, bump and spec maps) and then light
