dickie
Hi, this might seem like a strange question, but in Without Remorse John Kelly remembers a quote of latin before he goes on his killing spree (I think) the English is: "The last hope of the damned is not to hope for hope at all." Can anyone tell me what the latin was in the book? I need it for an English essay I was asked to do over summer. I've tried all sorts of translators but I can't get it. I did have a copy of the book but my brother's nicked it. Thanks,

dickie
tipe it up and i'll try to translate it ← Read the post above you before responding please, then you'd see I need the quote in Latin, I have the English. If you can translate it into Latin (although you seem to have a somewhat unsteady grasp on the English language on its own), then, again, the quote is up there. Thanks, *sorry, I'm in a bit of a bad mood, just found out I failed all my As Levels. Edited August 22, 2005 by dickie
the.ronin
[edit] ok i remember now ... actually it is not a direct translation. the latin proverb you are referring to is ... una salus victus nullam sperare salutem. which losely translates to... the only safety of the conquered is to hope for no safety. or the only salvation for the conquered is to hope for no salvation. of course this all predates john kelly or tom clancey ... it is taken from the aeneid, a latin epic written by virgil in the 1st century bc that tells the legendary story of aeneas, a trojan who traveled to italy where he became the ancestor of the romans. damn thats such a nice line im gonna put it in my sig. WhiteKnight77
Thanks mate! And you stole my idea, I also thought about putting it in my sig...anyways, my english essay awaits. All this so I can get some stupid qualification to say I can read English for uni in a foreign country! I'M FROM BLOODY ENGLAND! Of course I speak English! ← You should have been in my shoes this week. I don't speak or read German. Try ordering food in a cafe where the waitress doesn't speak any English, (thanks Tine and Jonathan, she helped me order dinner Thursday night and after I ate, he invited me over to their table for chat).
