Chernaya Noch - "Dark Nights" - is coming soon!

Recommended Posts

For three months now I have been working on a new mod based on the theme of Russian Spetsnaz operations in Chechnya. The full campaign of 17 missions is now 50% complete and the mod has been recently expanded into a full conversion mod with new skins and characters by Ingeloop, SOPMOD, and myself.

Earl generously allowed us to use his suite of Russian weapons from Vympel and SOPMOD created two excellent additions needed for the missions, including an SA-7 MANPAD and an RPO-A Shmel thermobaric rocket launcher.

The missions are scripted on GR1 maps, plus many of the best maps released in the GR community in recent years, including WSV, The Farm, TG1, The Prison, and more.

The vehicles used in the mod are from GR1 and Blakarion's fantastic OPFOR vehicles pack. Some of Blakarion's vehicles used in the mod include the BTR-70s, BTR-80s, BMP-2s, T80s, BRDMs, MI-17s, and MI-24 Hinds.

The Storyline....

Fall 2007 - After a year of renewed terrorist activity in Dagestan and Ingushetia and a resurgence of organized guerilla activity in Chechnya, the Russian Government has organized a new combined arms force under the authority of the Ministry of the Interior to aid local OMON and Army forces in dealing with the terrorist threat. The Player's Unit, a SOBR Interior Ministry Spetsnaz Team from the Urals, is reassigned to serve as one of two spetsnaz teams in the new unit.

The new unit, operating out of the air base in Hankala, will spend the next four months supporting local Russian Army and Interior Ministry efforts to contain the growing threat.

Scripting Approach

The campaign unfolds with many plot twists and turns, reflecting the unpredictable and treacherous situation faced by the Russians in Chechnya. I don't want to reveal to much now, but I will just say that there are a lot of surprises in these missions and things often are not what they seem. This I think will be one of the best features of this mod...I guarantee that this mod will keep you on your toes!

In scripting these missions, I also wanted to achieve a high degree of realism and sense of immersion in the campaign. Many missions are modelled after actual events that have happened in Chechnya during the 1994 and 2000 conflicts and carefully account for Russian and Chechen combat tactics and strategies such as the Chechen use of the 'deadly trioka', Russian use of heavy artillery screens, and Chechen ambush tactics.

Most missions are multi-part missions and feature a briefing in game by the unit's commander, Colonel Gryaznov. For example, in one mission, Part A might be a briefing at the air base in Hankala while Part B is the execution of the mission on another map. The 'run-and-gun' crowd probably won't like this, but that's fine...the goal of this mod is a realistic sense of life in the Chechen theater.

Most missions are also combined team assignments, with other friendly units participating in the operation. In fact, in some missions you can optionally call for assistance from outside friendly units by calling on the radio (placing a demo charge) if things get too hairy. Calling on the radio might fire artillery suppresion on a preregistered target or call for reinforcements by the local OMON Unit. It could also call in a strike by a pair of MI-24 attack helos.

I have also tried implementing alternative endings into many missions and scripted them so that failure to complete an objective doesn't automatically end the mission. I hate missions that suddenly end because you were detected or the demo guy got killed. In real life, missions don't end like this...instead adverse consequences occur. When possible, I have tried to replicate adverse consequences and reactions accordingly so that the mission will continue, regardless of the status of the objectives. It means that if you fail to complete an objective, don't be surprised if an unexpected force of chechens bears down on you or you get your butt chewed out by the unit commander at the end of the mission.

----------

We will use this thread to give updates as the mod get closer to completion. We will also post some screenshots soon so you can see the new characters and weapons and get a better sense of how the mod feels in game.

At the current pace, it will most likely be done by end of September or beginning of October. However, regardless of when I finish, it will not be released until at least a few weeks after the Armenia/SCAR mod is released per a promise I made to Cobaka regarding one of his new maps.

Ingeloop took some great screens yesterday of the new characters. I will post them soon.

PS: If anyone knows a good character modeller, I need a model fo a Chechen female civilian (shawl over head, full length loose clothes, etc). The Russian female civilian from GR1 just doesn't look right in the environment. (Yes, I know I am being anal. But that's just me! :D )

Cobaka and Streinger were not pushing me to finish the scripting phase enough I see..... Now also ATO Architect is doing is best

I'll send 'em to u if u want :)

SOPMOD,

Kak deyla, moi padroog?! Good to hear from you! Send the new Omon models and weapons on over to Ingeloop. He is doing the charatcer integration and actor making. I am focusing heavily on scripting right now.

I am about a night or two from finishing the 9th mission. I have two others that are close too (about 60-80% done). Once I have all of the holes filled in the campaign between mission 1 and mission 12, I will send you that beta I have been promising. I also have an idea brewing right now for another mission that I may squeeze into the campaign between the current mission 10 and mission 11.

Have you had any luck with the crashed Hind or destroyed vehicles? I could really use a crashed hind and destroyed T80! Cobaka came through big time on the OZM landmine I needed. They look great in game and very hard to spot unless you are very careful.
