Whats New for DIRECT X

Recommended Posts

This articel is quite long but good.

http://www.beyond3d.com/articles/directxnext/

Beyond 3D is an outstanding site ... very hardcore.

The article is pretty old though (Dec 2003) so quite a few new things have come to light with regards to DX

First of all, there will be no more DirectX ... in name that is. The API will be renamed "Windows Graphics Foundation" (WGF) as of Vista.

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1791702,00.asp

WGF v1.0 will be based on the current DX9.x and I'm betting that is what the basis of the Xbox 360 uses.

WGF v2.0 will be what DX10 was supposed to be.

Although all this new stuff is exciting, there are a lot of games out there that hardly fully utilize features from DX8.1 (which is what the Xbox's GPU uses)

And because many people still have GeForce 2/4 MX cards, many games needed to run at a DX7 level up to a year ago ...

check this out quote from ign about the X-FI soundcard

"Switching on the Crystalizer was like pulling out a set of earplugs that had been dampening our ability to hear correctly."

Good update, what will this mean to upgrades over the next six months say.

Should we waite or carry on with hardware updates,  for games Coming in the November December time. ??

Upgrading depends on quite a few factors ... it's all very individual. Factors include:

1. What games do you want to play? If you mainly play RTS games or the Sims, you don't really need a fast card. If you want to play BF2 with all the eye candy at a decent frame rate, you'll need to spend at least $300

2. Your budget. ATI and Nvidia have cards for <$100 to breaking your wallet

3. What is your current card? I don't upgrade unless a new card offers at least twice the speed of my previous card.

CR6,

This was a general comment on the implications of upgrading and the new software ie OS and direct x 10,

For instance buy a new grahpics card now for 300 bucks and find 6 months later it cant take advantage of the new OS system and directx You see what I mean.

My system is ok I feel for another year. X800xt Duramx board 1GIG ram.

OK, I see what you mean :)

First, your X800XT is definitely "adequate" for games coming out the rest of this year

I am currently running an ASUS X800XT and don't plan to upgrade until 2007 :P

Windows Vista will unlikely come out before the end of 2006, so I doubt we'll be seeing a new version beyond DirectX 9.0c much before then.

From what I've read (and please correct me if I'm wrong) the plan is for Vista to come out with WGF 1.0 (which is basically the same as DX9.x). The release of WGF 2.0/DX10 will likely depend more on how fast graphics hardware companies like ATI and Nvidia decide to refresh their technology.
