Stinger 0
I finally got my hands on XP Pro or so I think. Now I want to install it. I have my Home copy on NTFS and would like to if possible keep it intact and just have a dual OS system until I get my new mobo and then I will pick one to soley use. So how should I do this? Jus tgo about installing XP Pro then make a new partition and install to it in FAT32? And lastly can you have a stable Tri OS system? Cause I got another OS too but not sure I can mention it.Thanks in advance guys!
Xian Saint 0
<hasnt changed a bit> You will have a hard time installing XP (home and prof) on one drive on one system...it is possible but it can be a pain in the rear...usually the best way is on multiple hard drives...if its done on the same drive the problem lies with a lot of the setup/config files that will "point" both OS's to load at startup...even if you run a customized loader...(i.e. like the linux boot loader) Yes you can run three OS's...I used to run WIN NT/ME/Linux...now I run a TRIOS hard drive selector that isolates each OS to a hard drive and only one can be activated at a time...saves the trouble when reformatting and reinstalling...doesnt screw up all the other OS's... Oh, and BTW - I recommend only using legit software...and be careful not to discuss the illegal stuff that it sounds like you're using...
Stinger 0
You will have a hard time installing XP (home and prof) on one drive on one system...it is possible but it can be a pain in the rear...usually the best way is on multiple hard drives...if its done on the same drive the problem lies with a lot of the setup/config files that will "point" both OS's to load at startup...even if you run a customized loader...(i.e. like the linux boot loader) Okay a pain in the ###### is right but it works. I had made my Home partition the entire HDD cept for 7MB so I had to use Partition magic to split the Home partition up. It worked and I now have Home and Pro but after all that Pro isn't worth it for just a few days since my mobo will be here soon I guess I can play wit it though. Yes you can run three OS's...I used to run WIN NT/ME/Linux I'm thinking Longhorn, XP Pro and some Linux version. I run a TRIOS hard drive selector that isolates each OS to a hard drive and only one can be activated at a time...saves the trouble when reformatting and reinstalling...doesnt screw up all the other OS's I heard and saw one of those at tigerdirect.com looks really cool...for rich peeps lol. I was told that multiple OS's arent reccommended for gaming though too so I dunno what to do there. Oh, and BTW - I recommend only using legit software...and be careful not to discuss the illegal stuff that it sounds like you're using... Roger that. <hasnt changed a bit>??? From normal ways? WhiteKnight77 1
<hasnt changed a bit>??? From normal ways? I think that is exactly what he means. I am still amazed at the fact that you have a computer that even runs. The way you have it cobbled together with everything you try and do (hidden files!) You remind me of the guy who wants a tune up for his car that is running perfectly then leaves with a car that runs "terrible" after he "wanted" it fixed.
Stinger 0
Ummm, hidden files arent complicated nor do they mess up a computer at all in even the most remote aspect...I have 2 operating sytstems...how does that fudge it up any? I formatted not too long ago and my computer runs the best I have ever seen it go. The actual hardware is done perfectly and the ram thing had to have been a freak accident of some sort cause I have done much more complex things than that now. In fact since I formatted I havent had a single problem at all. I am still amazed at the fact that you have a computer that even runs. What have I EVER done that would make you think that my computer wouldnt run? Huh? I have reported problems but do you know of anything that I have done that would cause all of them? Do you know what I jack with? I dont think so. I think you just want to rain on my parade. I know that my computer now does better than a computer with same specs after I tune it. I have read benches done with similar and almost if not exactly the same specs as me Hardware wise and I have beaten them on Sandra and Winstone by miles. So next time you think that I "screwed up my computer and are so amazed that it runs" how about you get some facts about how well it performs. Last I checked my not so spectactular Ram (PC2100) did better than yours on your new system. Now wasnt this a waste of a post on both our parts? If you want to tell me how amazed you are that my system runs then pm me. Dual OS's arent that complicated now that I just went and did it. Have you EVER done anything "risky" with your puter? Or are you satisfied with mediocre results? I like to push my system to do its best and it has beeen performing great. way you have it cobbled together with everything you try and do (hidden files!) Cobbeled together? Hmm...almost all of the things I have done do come out with positive effects sometimes things go sour but thats life. Yodasplat 0
@Stinger - Whiteknight was saying that complex machines break a lot easier and a lot more often if you touch and tweak them constantly. He didn't say you computer is bad (aren't you touchy about it???) he just said it's surprising that it's still running without a problem considering the amount of un-orthodox tweaking you have done to it (as we can all testify considering that half the posts in this forum about funky computer tweaks are yours). I suggest you calm down.
Stinger 0
He has mentioned this b4 and I already know how he feels about it. No need to bring it up again and again. I think he means it deeper than what you said. And he is insulting my capabilities of running a smooth system. When he says I am surprised your computer still runs that DOES mean that man your computer is so screwed up cant believe with all the junk you do to it it works. That is an insult to me and my box. I dont care how you take it that doesnt matter, it was more directed to me and I take it offensively so he shouldnt have said that. WK, please stop talking crap on me and my box. Its annoying. I have some things I would love to say about you, but I don't. I keep my mouth shut cause I dont want to be mean or rude. So please treat me the way you wanna be treated. And if you didnt think that I get nad about this, you shoulda cause you said this crap b4 and you know how I reacted. So there isnt any excuse.
snakebite1967 0
Actualy stinger im also guilty of ribbing you about messing with your pc and such , its all meant as a joke dont take it personaly bud ok, weve seen numurours posts fileld with excitment over your latest idea followed by cries for help and such , we all tweak and we all make mistakes . Yodasplat 0
1 - if you have ANY problem with ANY staff member you report it to one of the Admins or Rocky and tell them that you think you are being harassed by a Staff member. Rocky will take action. In the past we had a Staff member whose name was Vanholt and he went totally crazy/nutcase on us, harassing other members and such. Rocky didn't think twice about demoting him and (finally!!) banning him. Rocky has not problem administering discipline even to Staff members. Have no fears about that. 2 - WK made a comment. I don't see any insult in what he said. If you have a tendency to take comments about your box or your skills as an "personal insult" that's YOUR problem.
Stinger 0
Actualy stinger im also guilty of ribbing you about messing with your pc and such , its all meant as a joke dont take it personaly bud ok, weve seen numurours posts fileld with excitment over your latest idea followed by cries for help and such , we all tweak and we all make mistakes . I feel that I know you better, and if I told you or expressed anger when you did something then you would stop it. WK didn't. Maybe I should post of all my successes then...and I admit I will tease about AMD every now and then but its a joke, if anybody with an AMD system took some offense and told me to completly stop and all, then I can assure you I would. messing with your pc Tweaking it for hightened levels of performance is the proper term weve seen numurours posts fileld with excitment over your latest idea followed by cries for help and such Not all my ideas nor posts are about trouble. Infact I hardly ever post these days with HELP Ive reallt fudged up, now its more how do I do this or that...I help people and people help me its a cycle. When you make fun of me I can laugh and take it as a joke cause we both mess around. But WK and I never do, I dont know him at all, he has never been very nice to me and so I dont take it well. If your best friend came up to you and told you you were dumb you'd think haha you stupid little and you'd know you were just kidding around. But if a stranger came up to you and said man you're dumb, you wouldn't feel so good and you would proly get somewhat angry. And if it was something you consider important like your mother he insulted then how mad would you be? 2 - WK made a comment. I don't see any insult in what he said. If you have a tendency to take comments about your box or your skills as an "personal insult" that's YOUR problem. 1, its not a problem its how I feel, now you are treating me bad too great. An insultdictionary.com: To give offense; offend I took offense the 1st time, that means there shouldn't be a second right? I told him so. Yodasplat if I said you were the biggest jerk in the world and your ignorance is amazing, then you would take offense and tell me not to say that. I wouldnt say it again but WK did and that IS where the problem is. The 1st time I was upset now this is the second time and Im mad. Edited March 7, 2003 by Stinger
snakebite1967 0
im also a confirmed tweaker , i cant help myself i use all bm tools religously and also am a regular at pcpitstop i also enjoy seeing results that beat higher end systems, I dont know White personaly but hes helped me a few times , ive never thought anything other than hes a decent guy. Yodasplat 0
I have had enough of this. I told him so. Yodasplat if I said you were the biggest jerk in the world and your ignorance is amazing then you would take offense and tell me not to say that. ... That would be a personal insult. WK did not say anything like that to you so your example doesn't count! ... I wouldnt say it again but WK did and that IS where the problem is. Tell me WHERE and WHEN did he say that. Stop alluding and accusing and just say it! Either you come up with proof and PM it to me and Rocky or you give it a rest. There's not time or space to be devoted to useless conversations. This thread is on a countdown to be locked.
Stinger 0
http://www.ghostrecon.net/forums/index.php...l=whiteknight77 You can tell by my attitude and I sent WK a pm that day too. Im sorry I dont have proof of the pm though. I think WK, is looking for the topic right now. That would be a personal insult. WK did not say anything like that to you so your example doesn't count! It doesn't matter! Okay I will make a new example just for you Yoda, lets say you tweak your car: Your car has is such a piece you tweak it and mess with it so much its a surprise it runs. come up with proof and PM I posted it for ya so others dont think I am just talking too Edited March 7, 2003 by Stinger
WhiteKnight77 1
Stinger I want you to really think about what I said. Here is one of your projects. When I see something like this I just shake my head. Leaving the tray open for the fan to blow air on it to cool it off also blows dust into the drive. Dust on the lens of the laser can cause errors reading a file or bit of information and result in a corrupt installation or not even let the installation start. You have to admit, you do try things that are pretty wild. I didn't insult you. I just think you do not think things through very well before you try something. How many fans so you have in your system not counting the one for your CPU? You needed to rig up a second power supply to run a fan and asked snake how to do it. I guess it was for the fan in the pic. To me that is the cobbled up part. Yes have tweaked my system some, heck I admit I have tried to overclock my vid card. Kept crashing so I turned it back. The 30 or so points in 3dMark won't worth burning up my vid card.
Yodasplat 0
... come up with proof and PM I posted it for ya so others dont think I am just talking too You are just talking. Sounds like someone here whose name I won't mention. We all know who this person is. IMO it's better to leave something alone if your not sure what it is for. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. this is what WK said in that post. he was referring to you??? I would have never guessed ... but now that you mention it though that description fits you to a T. and again I don't see anything insulting. he is stating his opinion. "it's better to leave something alone if your not sure what it is for" you agree with him or you disagree. If this makes you think that he's insulting you then you are going to have serious trouble in life with people-relations because there's plenty of people out there that come out a lot more tough and rude than Whiteknight will ever do. I am one of them. And on this note I now "rudely" lock this thread cause babysitting time is over.
