Rocky 1,224
I don't know how, either because of a windows patch, or because I fell asleep and Mrs Rocky didn't shut the PC down properly, but now on startup I get the windows user account login screen, instead of it just booting straight to the desktop. I only have one account, how do I get it to just boot straight to the desktop again?
GreyHaired 0
Believe you do that in the settings of the Useraccount in ControlPanel.
Rocky 1,224
Ah, I know why I have that pigging login screen now - it's since I installed .net! It created it's own ASP net user account I still can't see how to avoid a login screen totally though.

I might try this later when I have the guts... got it from the first link.. 1. Click Start on the Windows taskbar, and then click Run. 2. In the Open box, type control userpasswords2, and then click OK. 3. In the dialog box that appears, click to select the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" check box, and then click OK.
firefly2442 0
Get PowerToys for Windows XP "Tweak UI". Then go under login and check the autologin. That should fix it without having to go through all the trouble of changing the registry and so on. You should be able to find this on the microsoft website. GreyHaired 0
First link does the trick. Let's say your account name is "Rocky" and your pw is "xyz" In the dialog box you clear the box at the top "Users must enter..", click OK. In the new box you type user "Rocky", pw "xyz", click OK. Reboot. I'll go try your tip now though, thanks.
Rocky 1,224
I typed ASP.net user account into google, and found a page detailing exactly what had happened on my PC, and a few methods of reverting back to the usual logon process. i.e install the service pack. Rocky 1,224
Re-occurrance! For reference, the reg patch required to remove this account and the login it forces, is attached to this post.aspnetfix.zip
DonMiguel 11
can also load the command prompt (START->RUN type: cmd ) then type: control userpasswords2 highlight the account you want to auto login to and then uncheck the "must enter username/pass" checkbox. When you hit OK it'll ask for the password for that username. Enter it (or leave black for no pass) and hit OK. should autologin now easy. Much easier method that tweaking the Registry (esp for those uncomfortable with it)

Does this work for xp home also? (i'll add it to our tech notes at work)
DonMiguel 11
yes, works for all xp flavors. Its really the old Win2k user interface. I've also used it for clients who are too cheap to go to pro on their machines, but have installed Windows servers (Just edit their existing account username/pass to the domain account and the user authentication becomes transparent), and for clients that want to password protect that safemode only admin account.
