I saw this icon on the taskbar for removable drives, like those key flash memory.

My C:\ drive, a SATA drive is showing as one of them. I'm afraid my wife may accidentally click on it. How do I fix this or is this they way its suppose to be with SATA HD?

Thx

If it's on the taskbar, it's a shortcut.

You can check this when you right click -> properties.

Edit: Ooops. No, an internal drive should not show as "removable". Still would like to know what it says under "properties". Does it also appear like that after reboot?

it will as it should do... SATA drives are hot swapable so as long as they're deactivated you can take it out with no dammage to the data, the downside of this is that you can accidentally dissable it when you don't mean to, i've done it a couple times but luckily my SATA drive it just for games and media storage not OS's

i've not sure if you can remove the icon from the tast bar, i'll have a look and see what i can find

its the "green" one next to the Yahoo IM. If you leave the mouse pointer, a menu would say: "Safely Remove Hardware"

It would then open another menu indicating what devices you can "safely remove" i.e. USB floppy drive, flash drive, camera on USB, etc.

When it shows up in the system tray, it should also appear in "msconfig". I've never heard of this before and I doubt it's a question of the mobo. The system tray just indicates what's loaded in the memory when Windows starts up.

Edit: Found something that might give a hint:

http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=392325

Done that. But knowing its there, just don't really solve it, IF its a real problem. That forum does the "Ostrich Universal Solution": I don't see the problem, therefore its not there.

I'll dig around more forum and add more pics to the problem.

The way I read that forum link makes me think it's a nvidia chipset driver item. Of course that's a silly explanation if your mobo doesnt come with nvidia chipset

But if it does, question is if you got SP1 installed and which version of the chipset drivers. Can be an older or newer version solves the issue.

I don't think you need to reformat ...

I see that icon usually when there is removable storage media plugged into a USB slot. (like you said USB floppy drive, flash drive, camera on USB etc.)

Check all your USB slots, and tell us what other peripherals are hooked up to your system.

@CR6 the problem is: My C:\ drive which is a SATA drive is showing as a removable storage. Thats like a gateway to problem city if someone clicks on it to remove. I know about the hide function on the taskbar. I just wish it would hide permanently

You can hide the icon. Right click on the taskbar and select Properites. In the menu that pops up, you should see a check box called Hide Inactive Icons. Check it and click the Customize button. In the box that opens, check it and hide it. Then you can uncheck the Hide Inactive Icons box and then the removable drive icon should be hidden.

SATA is a young technology still, and still has it's issues. One of them being that performance isn't that much, or notably for that matter, faster than Ultra IDE 133.

In fact, as of right now, the performance gains are really negligible. And for that microscopic difference, you get to deal with 'New Tech' issues.

Ain't it grand?

That's why I never go New tech.

I usually find it ###### me off, causes more probs than not, and requires more attention than I want to give to it, than to actually USING my PC.

I let stuff be out 1-1.5 years before I jump onboard.

That way it's cheaper, and most bugs have gone away.
