Interesting Facts About E3

Recommended Posts

Was all the hoopla about the new XBox 360 all that met the eye at this years E3? Dan Morris, Editor-in-Chief at PC Gamer US notes this about this years E3:

Pop quiz: What was the big story at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo? We all know the answer, right? It’s Xbox 360, isn’t it? Isn’t that what we were told on countless infotainment spots on CNN, network newscasts, and Entertainment Tonight? Isn’t that what Frodo said on MTV?

But how do we explain, then, the fact that PC games outnumber Xbox games 2-to-1 in the final nominations for Game of Show from the E3 Game Critics Awards? Were the judges simply not watching the MTV unveiling? Did they miss Lil’ Jon talking about how great the 360 is? Didn’t they get a swig of J Allard’s crunk juice?

He goes on to note, that few games for XBox360 were nominated for awards.

Perhaps because new systems are always viewed with caution, and rarely have their launch title win awards before they come out?

More likely that the 360 titles running will in all probablility bear little resemblance to the finished article, not least because the finished games will actually be running on Xbox 360 hardware, unlike the E3 games.

Yeah. For that reason, new system's games are rarely nominated for anything.

Most people boycotted the PS3 entirely, since there was nothing even running in real time.

From my understanding, there was only one working XBox360 in the whole joint and that was at ATi's booth and not even MS'. So much for the hype.

There were a lot of games running on it's early dev kit, which ran at about 1/3rd of it's power. Every 'Xbox360' video from e3 was running on one of those.

On a Mac, not an XBox360.

That's not true. Anandtech, (which was the only member of the media to say that) corrected themselves when they got more information. It was running a modified version of an IBM processor also seen in Macs, but the system was not a mac. It was the early 360 dev kit, a very stripped down system (off the shelve graphics chip, and one out of three processors. Also, the real system is planned to draw a lot of it's power from the way those four items relate to each other.

There are plenty of good 'console sux lolz!!1' arguments to make, but that isn't one of them.

Lack of XBox360 hardware aside, even you have to admit, with the preshow and during show hoopla about the 360 that more PC games where shown and nominated for awards than the new system had. If the 360 is such big news to everyone, why wasn't more games represented for it?

I just said why. It's a new system, and people don't trust it yet. This isn't the first time we've seen this (nor is it the first time consoles have temporarily passed the PC in power)... I really can't see the reason why everybody is treating this like it's new.

So since it's impossible for Xbox360, PS3 and Revolution games to have received nominations, it's clear there is a bias towards existing platforms, which the PC would be dominant since the current Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube were in the process of being superceded.

Dan Morris is, as he is oft guilty of, wearing blinders. It's interesting to note that the editor in chief of PC Gamer can't see the upcoming shift from the PC back to consoles, in terms of market dominance. Sort of like some folks here.

I think the point he was trying to make is that while all the main stream media like CNN, MTV, Entertainment Tonight and even local news broadcasts were such that they only saw the XBox360 and the showing of those games verses PC games that were shown and playable. As an editor for a PC gaming magazine, of course he is going to be a bit biased, he was just pointing out the folly of the rest of the media.

How many games did we report on that were PC releated? Granted we are interested in the R6/GR series, but we did touch on a few other games, yet how many were geared towards the PC?

It's like not seeing the forest for the trees.

We only talk about tactical shooters and sims around here.

And those are both pretty much PC only genres.
