uncle_john
i was just curious as to how accurate the weapons in GR are compared to real-life military weapons? for instance, do military rifles have a 2 x's zoom on some weapons, and do real support weapons even have a zoom? are sniper rifles really able to zoom in they wey they do in the game? another thing, do they have sensors in real life military (this seems very unrealistic)? another thing that bothers me, how come enemies show up as red diamonds on the map when no sensors are even down? i love the map view, but don't think it should show where the enemy is coming from. oh well, just curious on some input from some of you army pro's out there. i love this game, but would like to see it portrayed as close to real-life specs, and situations as possible. i would also like to see a mod of some kind that offers more enemies in the original campaigns, and change where the attack from. i would also like to see a mod that changes up some of the starting / spawn positions in online play like siege. uncle john
Cobblers
i was just curious as to how accurate the weapons in GR are compared to real-life military weapons? for instance, do military rifles......... Dear Uncle John, Thanks for your letter good to hear from you again. I can't help you with regards to the real life weapons stats, but I can help with the rest, I hope! From what I gather the reason enemys show up on the map is due to whether they are in your field of vision, have made some movement or noise that has attracted you to their whereabouts etc. But it is strange at times I must admit, cause there are enemys that you'd think would show up on the map that are let's say only 5ft away, and in the next instance an enemy that is over 100ft does show up!! Regards the mods, I'd recommend using the Hantrox 4 mod. You should be able to find a link to DL this mod from this very web page. There is more enemies to kill, with better AI too imo. Another one you may want to try is my own personal fav called Preacher maps, some of the Coop missions are quite a challenge. Hope this helps, Love, Cobblers PS Dad says hi!! Zantar45
The guns in Ghost Recon are almost true to life. Here are a few of the minor inaccuracies. Most Assault Rifles have 1.5x scopes, the SA80 breaks during most inoppertune times in the field, the MP5 is as lethal as any other gun unless body armor is in use, M136 AT carrying personel usualy take 2 M136s with only 1 AT rocket each, there are real life sensors-they dont work the same way and are a bigger then the ones in game, sniper rifles zoom a hell of alot farther but due to ''the fog of war'' the zoom has drasticly tuned down, the 20mm grenades with the OICW shoot straight, and a few others. But the game is as realistic as is needed to be still fun, and challenging at the same time.

GR has done a very good job overall of duplicating effects.

Support weapons some have scopes ( stoner models and several other models ) then you can add thermal or nite vision scopes, not to mention laser aim devices. Trust me almost everything but a kitchen sink can be added to a military weapon.
Copenhagen
how does the scope actually work? is there a switch or a button that you have to push on the scope to change the zoom rate from in to out? and do support guns really have scopes on them, i guess they could be added as an acces. thanks for the input so far.  Scopes don't have some button you push to make them magnify. Towards the mid-section of the scope there are 2 "knobs", one on the top and one on the right side. They adjust for "windage" (left - right) and "elevation" (up - down). The lense you look through has an adjustment to change the magnification (zoom). You can turn the eye piece clockwise or counter-clockwise to adjust the magnification, IE: from 6.5x magnification to 20x magnification. I don't think they're "scopes" as much as they're "sights". Aimpoint, ACOG, Red-Dot, HOLOsight, Reflex, ect. Edited March 5, 2003 by Copenhagen
=SOB= Sliver
i didn't see this answered if it was sorry, but yes there are sensors in real life, not positive but i believe they pick up echoes. i believe i may have even read something here at gr.net about them quite some time ago
Zantar45
Yes, somewhere on GR.net I read that also, might have to go digging a few months back in the news section......
Tehranx
They do have 'sensors' in real life, but not quite of the variety that GR has, they are usually considerably larger and harder to use. They basically work off of the 'radar' theory (motion sensor essentially).

Jex
Here are a few of the minor inaccuracies. Most Assault Rifles have 1.5x scopes, the SA80 breaks during most inoppertune times in the field. That's actually an urban myth. Whilst there have been reported cases of it falling apart in its earlier versions the SA80A2 is an excellent rifle and used to have a x4 site on it which has now been upgraded (so I'm told) to a x6 (called SUSAT Sight Unit Small Arms Trilux). I myself never had any problems with it and found it to be a very accurate rifle.
The_Slink
Sensors in real life pick up heat, movement and sound. That's AFAIK.
TRC
Uncle John, to answer 2x zoom for weapons without scopes-that's a gameplay issue. It's set up to simulate looking through your sights. I believe it was WK who posted awhile back, that in the marines, they would shoot with iron sights only, out to several hundred yards at the range for qualification and that the m16 was pretty accurate on single shot. WhiteKnight77
Yeah I did post about that. The Marines (at least when I was in boot camp and later when we had to go) fire from the 200, 300, and 500 yard line with the M16. At the 500 yd line the target is a man size sillouhette and they use a 12" spotting disk so you can see where your round hit. The best shooters can hit targets with the M16 from even further as it does have a range of 1000yds (IIRC) tho the maximum effective range is from 503 to 601 yds depending on variant. Zantar45
Whilst there have been reported cases of it falling apart in its earlier versions the SA80A2 Thanks for the correction, I was rushing and I thought of the wrong variant. Yes the SA80 is a very accurate gun, I was think of the older model L89A1 during the testing trials of the gun. later
