Subtropical map

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm finally getting around to playing with the editor :P

I love the SubTropical map, with all of the cane fields and little hut villages. I have been playing around on the map for a bit to scout out some areas, but I ran into a few issues.

-First, my FPS seems to be a bit lower than on other maps. Sure, I have some high settings and DXDLL running with most options on, but my FPS is already down to 20-25 before I've placed anything. With my current settings, I run alot of the other maps with MUCH higher FPS results. Does anyone else seem to have a bit of trouble with this map?

-Secondly, the huts and village structures are not coded right. I walk "through" steps and floors, but get blocked by railings and walls. Anyone know if any of these issues are due to be fixed?

I want to make a mission that will not be laggy for most people, does anyone have any suggestions for maps?

Freya and Trinity seem to be good maps. Although on both, as found out first on Trinity and just recently found out on Freya, if you die on a bridge you fall right through. Not sure if this is something that occurs on all maps or just these two.

One of our members has done up a mission on Freya that will be released soon to the public and hasn't in all the beta testing we did shown to have any lag so far. This mission has more than just a "few" OPFOR units on it as well.

I don't like the Subtropical map, mainly because I have a mediocre PC and I can't freaking move for the -40 frame rate I get on it (I would love the map if I had a good system). I haven't seen all that many missions on it either, probably for that reason.

The least laggy (at least for me) are the European ones; Freya and Trinity included.

en4, where have you been hiding? Haven't seen you in-game in a long while.

:) Hey Sart. Been changing diapers actually...

My wife and I recently had our first child...and that has changed EVERYTHING.

I've decided to spend what little computer time I have designing a few missions...

:rocky: Ok, back on topic here.

Has anyone addressed this map issue with the developers over at vbsresources.com? This map is beautiful and I would love to use it. It would be nice if they made a patch that increased the FPS (maybe cut the foilage amount) and fixed the huts bug...

It seems silly to have that great big map that only high end computers can handle...

Freya and Trinity seem to be good maps.

They are very good maps, but just be careful with view distance settings and lots of scripts running. If you plan on running a few scripts, tone back the viewdistance.

Just placing heaps of OPFOR doesn't take the big performance hit - it's mainly scripts and viewdistance that take up CPU time.

Scripts that loop and wait are particularly nasty...

That's what I've found anyway.

BTW N4 - Congrats buddy. I got two of the rugrats, so I can vouch for the drop off in online gaming.

 Ok, please restrain yourself from rolling your eyes...because here comes a big n00b question. Can I set the view distance in the mission itself and therefore make the SubTropical map more playable for everyone else?(if so, how?) Or were you referring to each player adjusting his individual settings within VBS1?

:) Thanks. It has destroyed my online gaming time, but the miracle of life is sure worth it. It definitely gives purpose and meaning to your life in a profound way.

Yes you can En4cement, you can simply increase the amount of fog/mist (click on the clock/weather icons in the editor, and then move the 2nd slider (below the sun/cloud symbols) from left to right to increase the mist/fog amount). Congrats too are in order for you and your wife ;)
