2K Games announced today that Stronghold 2 has shipped to stores across North America and will be available in Europe on April 22. Stronghold 2 is a real-time strategy title that concentrates on the construction and defense of a castle. The game features a story driven single player mode along with many different multiplayer options.

"Stronghold 2 combines a stunning 3D engine with deep, intuitive gameplay to create an unparalleled strategic experience for all types of gamers," said Christoph Hartmann, Senior Vice President of Publishing for 2K Games. "This isn't just a sequel, it's a major step forward for the genre."

"The Stronghold series showcases our love of castles and medieval life," said Simon Bradbury, Director at Firefly Studios, and lead designer on Stronghold 2. "With Stronghold 2, we've added more depth to both the castle life and siege gameplay and produced what we think is the definitive medieval strategy game."

Stronghold 2 is rated "T" for Teen and is available on PC for $39.99.

I'm a huge fan of Stronghold, and I have to say it's never been far from my PC since I bought it just over three years ago. Stronghold 2 looks a lot prettier, and has a few more bells and whistles.

In the meantime though, and if you've never dabbled with the franchise or indeed, the genre, check out Stronghold and its sequal, Crusaders. You should be able to buy both new, for a decent price, especially with the release of '2.

Yeah, I played the original for a little bit. It was OK. There were a couple things that bothered me like soldiers hacking down stone walls.... anyway, from the screenshots it looks like they really improved on the graphics. However, I'm not sure how well it will contend with all the other RTS games that are out or will be coming out.
