Dan Posted April 20, 2005 Share Posted April 20, 2005 I hadnt until today. I work at a net cafe with over 40 computers, and today a random package got chucked through the door. It contained 50 odd CDs of something called "ubuntu". A linux OS. I think what happened is that crazy folks who made it found our website (not updated since 1998) and thought we would be a good outlet for them. There was a letter explaining the point ubuntu, and encouraging me to use, abuse, copy, distribute etc etc their product. They even included a happy little card board stand to put the CDs in. Neither me nor the IT guy at work had any idea what this was all about, very random. They cared enough to post a package larger than a shoebox from Switzerland though, not a cheap exercise. All the CDs are neatly and professionaly packaged, and i have a re-order code, that means they will send me as many CDs i want, for free, when ever i want them. im going to install ubuntu onto a 2nd HDD in my home computer and see how it goes. Each pack has 2 CDs, one full install disk, and one plug and play trial disk, where u bott from the CD and look at it. supasniper Posted April 20, 2005 Share Posted April 20, 2005 it's called a "live disk" so you just boot to it and run the OS straight from it. they're REALLY useful for data recovery in that when your windoze install goes south just boot to the live disk, move your required data somewhere safe then you can flatten the system to your hearts content (i use knoppix rather than ubuntu but it does the same job) but as you work in a web cafe i guess all the machines are just installed from a ghost image and data will be backed up so this is redundant for your work Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I know the power of Knoppix and linux, from some personal experiences and talking with the IT bloke at work (we have a linux server) Im getting fairly excited actually. firefly2442 Posted April 20, 2005 Share Posted April 20, 2005 Yep. I tried it out on my new AMD64 system for a little bit. It's very nice. Based off debian. The one I tried only had Gnome as the desktop manager but apparently there is a KDE version out now/soon too.
