WhiteKnight77
Can someone help me understand the easiest way to remove a background in either PhotoShop 6.0 or PSP 8.0? If not, if I supply the image, could you do it for me?
Giampi
Send it to Jack57. He made miracles with my photos
Rocky
In PSP use the lasso tool to select the foreground areas, then use a drop down menu to Invert the Selection, then hit the delete key on the keyboard.
WhiteKnight77
I have never been good with the lasso tool. I think I got it though.
magnumkp
Or, create a new layer, select the Mask tool, you will get a white box on that layer. Then "paint" the background out. Don't worry, you aren't deleting it, if you switch to white (or is it black?) you can paint it back.

WhiteKnight77
Actually, I wanted to remove the background from the loading screen so I had the Silent Hunter logo so I could make that. I am not really good with the lasso and sometimes the magic wand just doesn't fit the bill. I seem to recall someone talking about using the background removal tool in PS, but I don't remember who it was or what thread. It just takes a long time to do it all manually and in places, pixel by pixel.

Pfarrer
I got it taken care of, thanks for asking. ← For future reference: There are three ways to remove backgrounds from images. The first is to use the Path tool to draw a path around the part of the image you want to keep. Once you are done, save the path and select the "Make Selection" option from the Paths palette menu. You can use this selection to create a layer mask (Layer > Add Layer Mask) which will make the background invisible. The second way is to enter Quickmask mode, paint out the background with the brush tool, and exit Quickmask mode. This will give you a selection you can use to make a layer mask. The third way is too look at the different color channels. Generally, one of them will give you a good range of contrast between background for foreground, and you can use the magic wand tool to make a general selection. Once that is done, you can use the Quickmask mode to refine the selection. If none of the channels give you the needed contrast, you can duplicate the best one and use Curves or Brightness/Contrast to increase the contrast until it's good. For complicated images, this is usually the best way, as you can get the program to do most of the work for you.
