Silent Hunter III Rocks

So tonight I was doing the torpedo training missions to get up to speed on them and figuring out the best way to use them in game and getting more proficient at using them. On the 3rd practice round I finally figured out how to sink all 5 ships in practice. I sunk the first 4 with no problem and had 5 torpedoes left for the last ship. I set off after it and plotted my strategy for sinking it. Now this tanker was zig zaggin as all get out.

I ran the tanker down and had the weapons officer plot a firing solution for a 2 torpedo spread at 2 degrees to ensure a hit. Once I had manuevered into postion that I thought was a good firing postion, I let the hounds loose. Both fish track true, but missed just aft of the ship. I turn hard to starboard (the right) to line up an aft firing shot. I get into firing postion and fire only to miss again.

I then turn hard to port to set up and fire my last torpedo in forward tube number 4. I fire and using the free camera, I follow the torpedo as it tracks straight and true right to the middle of the ship, only for it to pass under the hull by less than a meter. I guess I had the torpedo set to impact and not magnetic.

One torpedo left, in the aft torpedo tube. I swing the sub hard to starboard to line the shot up. I set the depth for the fish to run at 3 meters. It is my last shot to try and sink the tanker. Once I have the boat pointing in the right direction, I take my shot. As before, I watch the fish on it's run to the tanker. I watched as it struck amidships only to bounce off the hull much to my amazement. The torpedo settled to the bottom without doing any damage to the tanker. Foiled again by not setting it to magnetic instead of impact.

SHII has been full of surprises so far, it totally rocks. If you want something different to play compared to the games you normally play, this is it.

Both games are great, but if you really want crew interaction, SHIII will give it to you in spades. Now I have played both, but this is a big step and greatly improved. The free camera gives you views unavailable with SHII. Effects are so much better with ships actually breaking in half or listing prior to sinking. A view from underneath shows air escaping from the hulls as they settle to the bottom.

If you want to play MP with DDs and other subs, then SHII/DC is the way to go, but for just subs in Coop (I haven't tried yet), then SHIII.

Note, both games have a fixed resolution with SHII having a resolution of no more than 800x600 and SHIII at 1024x786. SHIII needs a really good system to run. Even I get some slowdowns when there is a lot of particle effects happening at the same time (like fire and smoke).

Remember, I did give the game 2 thumbs up.

My first Sub simulator. Looks like I tuned in just in time.

In the first image, are the Nazis taunting American civilians on the East coast.

Also, as the game's obviously politically correct and there'll be no Swastikas visible in this WWII based sim, I take it too that no allied naval or merchant seamen get harmed during gameplay, and they all get rescued with even getting their feet wet as their ship plummets below the surface of the Atlantic :P

Actually, that first screenshot is from the navigation training mission. you actually start in Demark. Yeah, there are no swaztikas to be seen at least from the devs.

I did see some screens of seamen flying through the air somewhere, I think it was at the Ubi SHIII forums.

Those screens were my own in-game shots, but I have seen screens with sailors getting blown sky high in explosions.

No lifeboats unfortunately. The devs say thay left survivors out for moral reasons. Those reasons became obvious when I saw people complaining they didn't have lifeboats to take out with the deck guns, heh heh.

I've more than once thought "Man, I'm not sure I could live with myself if this were real"...Sending all those people into the murky depths. The highest tonnage ship I've come across so far is a passenger liner and the renown points it gets you makes it a treat to sink. All those hundreds of totally oblivious people, prolly getting hammered and listening to the BBC latenight theatre or something....BOOM...glub! glub! glub!

I'm glad I don't have to see them drown.

 ....nice wallpaper there WK, however I do find your fascination with your new game, and the fact that you've been taking an unhealthy pleasure in taking screenshots and that you delight in sinking and watching your victims meet their peril below the water, somewhat disturbing

I've been playing this game since the day it came out,Patrol 24 with U96 yep that's right, the Sub from Das boot,I've sunk over 200K tonnes, the awards were way to easy so I downloaded a mod to make awards harder,so I've only got the Knights Cross, plus the Iron crosses and the clasp,my crew are superb, shame I'm heading back to the sandbox this week otherwise I'd load it onto my laptop!!

Nice wallpaper White night, where did you find the SH3 logo?

Hehe in the Brothers In Arms therad I posted about how I liked its gameplay ... well ... after finishing campaign and getting slightly tired of online play (for the money) .. I walked back into the Game store and exchangd it for SH3 ....

WhiteKnight mate ... if it wasnt for this thread I would never have had a sniff at the official site & thus never would have exchanged .... well I did and it was the best descision I made ... this sim rules big time. I would go as far to say its my GR1 all over again for the buzz and imersion. Im loving it and thats only on training without any exams! Eye candy is sweet and the interface rules, dynamic - detailed ... love plotting the map (reminds me a small amount like gr1 in the gets you thinking side) ... after moaning on here and on AGR-S about swat4 being a dissapointment .. I think Ive found new faith in gaming .. Im one happy chap with this sim thats for sure. :rocky::thumbsup::thumbsup::yes::yes:

PS - WhiteKnight77 - I put the offical forum thread that deals with plotting with a formula into a word doc which I will up soon. Also did you get the unofficial recognition pdf's from that link on forums? ... had that puppy sorted before installing the game LOL .. this is a great sim. :D

Yeah, I have the recognition manual .pdf's. Now to take them over and see how much to get it bound (being out of work makes buying things a bit tough ya know).

I do like on the map being able to make marks now. you can plot out the track of a ship and if you get in close enough, you can plot out it's zig zag course. I am still practicing the torpedo lessons and have got it pretty much figured out, now if I can just stop missing aft of the bloody ships. ;)

Calius, what is your name over there and the post you are talking about the one with the formulas? I never was really good at math so I just plot a course to where I want to be then worry about setting up my shots once I get to the area. As long as I am in front of them I am good.

Im still learning torpedos .. keep bouncing off !! DOH ... only had a few hours on it so far though.

I am calius2004 on the UBI site but havent realy posted on SH3 forum yet, anywho I nabbed the copy and images and shoved them into a word doc the other day .. not printer friendly as page breaks are a tad wonky (just resize the pics to fit them better.

Grab the doc - HERE (its a .doc file and is 1meg).

Go for magnetic triggers. I find the impact-set torps just bounce off alot. By default the trigger is set for impact/magnetic which is fine. You just need to get into the habit of bringing up that recognition manual to check hull depths. When you first open the book after loading a game, hit the up arrow (not down) and the book-cover it brings up will be for the merchants. You'll have your c2,c3,tankers and passenger ships among others listed there. Check your target ship's depth and then go to the TDC set the depth of the torp to the hull-depth of the ship (or a hair deeper)...and remember which torp goes for what ship.

This way the torp explodes when it passes under the hull rather than impacts with it. There are 3 main advantages to this:

1- The angle at which the torp "hits" is almost irrellevant. Once the magnetic sensors pass under a big enough chunk of steel, Boom! This means you can down a ship from an angle that would almost surely bounce off for a side-impact.

2- An under-the-hull hit will down a ship in one shot ALOT more often than side-impacts...once you get efficient at dialing in torpedo depths you will sink alot more boats per patrol.

3- In a convoy, you'll find that even though you have a clear line to the target when you fire, a smaller vessel will sometimes get in the way and take the torp you meant for a large tanker. By dialing in depths and aiming only at the big boats, you'll find that your torps go right under the little merchants, saving you from tipping off the whole convoy for a lousy putt-putt.

Oh, and 4- It's alot more fun and satisfying.

OK, most of us here seem to have UK versions (yeah, I do too) and am looking to try something, but I need someone with a US version. From the x:\....\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Textures\TLowRes\tex folder I need the following files:

German.tga

German_m.tga

JU87Stuka.tga

JU88.tga

MesserschmittBF109.tga

Sparviero.tga

Sunderland.tga

From the x:\....\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Textures\TNormal\tex folder, I need these files:

German.tga

German_m.tga

NBB_BismarkC.tga

If you have a US version, I would really appreciate having them sent to me. I am trying something out.
