firefly2442 0
Flat panel monitors like the one shown above are great for space savers. I'm going to college in about 4-5 months and I'd like to get ride of my current monitor which is huge and go with something like that. I've heard that they're bad for gaming. Is this problem being fixed? Will they improve enough in the future do you think so that I should wait and buy one later? Thanks.
Stinger 0
They are bad because they cant refresh quick enough for most of the better GFX cards to be fully utilized. One day this will be fixed but right now it isnt last I knew.
RooK 0
The main two problems are refresh rates and ghosting. Refresh rates are locked around 60hz if I remember right, which in itself isn't that bad of a thing. Ghosting it where you run into problems. The LCD can't keep up with the changes from the graphics card and leaves parts of the old image on the screen creating a 'ghost' effect. For office apps this is fine, but in games it's a constantly changing scene. Most of the high-end LCDs minimize this to where it is basicly unnoticable, but are you willing to pay $700 for a high-end 17" LCD just so you can lose some weight/space but still have a substandard picture? terp09 0
hmm maybe that's why my refresh rate is stuck at 60 in game. in windows its 80, but when i check it in GR its 60. i have a 17" LCD. i've never seen any ghosting though. i love my monitor cuz i have so much desk space, and in college, desk space is crucial. Cobblers 12
I use a Iiyama 15" TFT Monitor. And I love it, I don't see any problem with it myself. Good space saving desk wise, they loof great and reduce eye strain too!!
Tr4nC3R 0
I use a Iiyama 15" TFT Monitor. And I love it, I don't see any problem with it myself. Good space saving desk wise, they loof great and reduce eye strain too!! This is true, but come on admit it most of us would prefer a 21" CRT with a refresh of over 120. We only get one pair of eyes, and we may as well get the best of em. Never mind that eye strain and desk space. Get it filled )) LOL. I got a Recon/Sun microsystems Sony monitor 21" and its probably the best I have seen, This cost me £50. I use a CRT at work and I prefer for graphics work and gaming. I find that the TFT is a little overated and people use em for different reasons than most gamers. We just want it as big and as fast as we can. Hey why don't you get a duel head and get a CRT and a TFT on the go at the same time. sorry you need the space LOL. S.Opity. c/o Trancer
Cobblers 12
Well apart from my above thread they look very cool too. I also hate the brightness from CRT monitors, and find that the TFT's are nicer on the eye. Besides, I don't seem to perform on GR that badly considering, but yeah I suppose at the very least it'd be nice to have the option pf having both a TFT and a 21" CRT monitor to mess around on as I see fit. magnumkp 0
All i know is that on traditional screens 60hz can give serious headaches, I'm just wondering if the same rules apply to flat screens. I might be getting confused. Someone help.
Tr4nC3R 0
Now I'm confused. Oh I thought the higher the refresh the less flicker, Better for you. This in turn Reduces Headaches caused by flicker. BUT, a higher refresh rate makes the screen quicker, This too could give you a headache. Hey, I have a head ache. UV lights are also another factor to consider. I play with the lights off In a darkened room. What do you do ? Is this also a bad idea. Help ! we need a monitor doctor...

magnumkp 0
Sorry to panic you all guys apparently: Flat panels reflect ambient light away from your eyes, reducing glare and eyestrain, so put away the eye drops. Plus, flat-panel monitors produce no screen flicker problems, even at refresh rates as low as 60Hz. As for gamers: (taken from the same page atBestBuy.com The gamer. Into gaming but want to experience better graphics? It's true that the initial round of flat-panel monitors didn't keep up as well with gaming action and resulted in some blurring from time to time. But the latest flat panels have improved response rates and reduced the blurring so gamers can benefit from the crisp colors, sharp graphics and expansive viewing areas they deliver for maximum gaming performance. From now on I'm carrying a health warning. Edited March 7, 2003 by magnumkp
