That could have been near Jabal's Hammer, I've done an escort mission near there, and that looks like it.

As for being outside the wire, it looked more like the "No Man's Land" in between the FOB and the actual wire.

Reminds me of the time we were playing Uno (card game) and without any alarm/siren we just heard the the incoming, and start hiding behind our sand-bunk.

5/11 Marines (Howitzers) started firing back within minutes.

Sometimes I just wonder how they "tri-angulate" where it comes from.

One guy that was picked up on a raid mit 60mm mortar said that one guy shows up and tells him the angle and direction to fire. They pretty much act in cells and do the attacks. Thing is that we heard is that it was just farmers who got paid to do the attacks, or threatened with their lives. Or the garden variety "Screw the Americans" schtick.
