Plane Loses Engine on Take Off- Flys to England

Recommended Posts

A new Eurpoean Union law reguarding cusomer compensation for flight delays "forces" British Airways pilot to fly from Los Angeles International Airport to England after it looses an engine on take off.

This Times Online article details how the control tower radioed the crew of the 747 and how they circled over the Pacific before heading east after getting word on what to do from BA headquarters.

If it had been me, I would have put the plane on the ground. There is no way for a pilot to inspect to see what damage has been done while circling over water. That is one asinine law that the EU has drawn up.

I have downed aircraft for less than that.

BA said financial concerns had played no part in the decision. Captain Doug Brown, the senior manager of BA’s 747 fleet, said the only consideration had been “what was best for passengers”.

That's BS, now, isn't it? What's best for the passengers would be for the pilot to put the plane down and see what's wrong. I'd be very angry indeed if I learned that my wife and/or myself had flown across the ocean in a malfunctioning aircraft.

I want to hear Yoda comment on this. :)

Common sense dictates that when your ability to stay in the air is dictated by the engines propelling you forward and you lose one, you really ought to quit flying until it's replaced ASAP.
