Hi,

I have a few people interested in porting some maps from other games such as Rogue Spear and others into GR.

I was just wondering how it is done.

Do you need the original file?

Where can you get it?

Do you have to make changes to the map itself to be compatible?

Im assuming the possibilities on this are limited but, then again someone did port over every single SOAF map.

The SOAF maps are easily ported, but it's a copyright violation in most of the developed world to distribute them to others. For personal use, it's generally fine.

With other maps, unless the source code was released, one has to manually recreate the maps in 3DSMax, with self-made geometry and textures for both a tech and a legal reason.

So whoever ported say dedust recreated the map from scratch?

or had the developement file?

Recreated from scratch.

Would it be legal to use the SOAF maps and send them to others if all involved owned both GR and SOAF?

Yes, but get a receipt. ;) Technically, yes, as long as all parties could prove ownership of both titles, it's an issue that would likely be dismissed well prior to a lawsuit. An app that scans for SOAF and GR, and automatically moves the SOAF maps to the GR directory, in a format GR will parse already exists, for example.

While im at it, can RVS maps be ported to GR?

Two very different engines. There's no tech way of just translating maps from RvS (Unreal Engine) to GR (RSE proprietary), but if you recreate them from scratch, as long as all geometry and textures are original to you, share as you see fit. It becomes an homage (and falls under Fair Use) if it's all your work, no matter if it's visually and gamewise indistinguishable.

I'm not a lawyer, but I do have a passion for tracking this sort of IP rights subject.
