Snipers in GR

Recommended Posts

Definitely try sniper's challenge if you want some tough tough gameplay. like the guy said, available right here at GR.net. Took me a month to make the mod, and I may make one or two more sniper mods for Desert Siege as well as Island Thunder yet.

I don't think GR really accomadates snipers at all. The distances are far too short (I think the farthest you can see is 200m).

To compare - I used to play delta force 2 and was getting pretty good at sniping (my longest kill being just over 1300M) with guys getting kills out as far as 2500M (with the barret). This game also had bullet tradjectory to account for and wind.

I prefer to play a sniper role but as a sniper I want to engage my targets at 1000M minimum - only because I stand a better chance of survival being shot at from 1000M than I do from 150M.

Imo the sniper really isn't catered for in this game and is deliberately hindered (by the recticle zero time).

Yes but in Delta Force you had a rangefinder sticked to your weapon, you could by two commandsd adjust the crosshairs to any range and the enemy A.I. was dumber than "2 Stupid Dogs"(Cartoon Network ) you shot the hell out of 2 enemys and the rest of 20 would crouch and look in the direction of your shot and very rarely they would run or go prone.

So it`s Target Practice (Delta Foce) vs Short Range Sniper(GR) against very determined opponents who know what they are doing and somtimes act like snipers with AK-47 but if you use my mod the above problem is no long present so you have a very realistic Game.

Actually, there are a few maps in GR where engaging tangoes at distances up to 470 metres can be done. River is one of them. Go ahead weasel - let the ideas fly - but i won't be be making them too soon anyhow since im taking a break from the computer for a while - just check email and forum mostly, then do some exercise

Heh - haven't played GR original missions for over a year now. Mods and custom maps are all I do now, so I meant the fog in that context - through IGOR and disabling fog, so yeah, that guy's comments apply in that instance. Sorry - should have specified.

Agreed in SP the AI was dumber than a dead slug but in MP it was a different story. My point here though is generally snipers would engage a target from a greater distance than those given in GR and hence don't really get to play the role they should do,.

Our resident snipe might be along to add some advice for you.

;)

I'd like to say first off that there are some very valid points put out for the Superhuman AI We sometimes see in "GR". That said I'd rather have Enemies that I CANNOT MISS AT ALL Versus those that are basically Target Practise for Me while Ingame. This doesn't mean however that I don't have Issues with the AI too. Its just the best AI around @ the Current Time...

As far as an Enemy being able to direct Fire in at Your Position once You've made a shot is a given.

There are many elements Involved in this but those You can readily use Yourself in "GR" are ;

- The "Crack/Bang" Location Method for a Shooter within 500 Yards ( Only works with a Good sound System and EAX Enabled Ingame ).

- Using Impact Traumas and the Postures that Your Comrades Fall Dead or Wounded in to locate the Enemy Shooter's Direction also works.

- Using a Hard Object Impact behind a Shot through one of Your TeamMates to decide the direction of the Shooter through Bullet Trajectory and Line of Sight.

- Checking a Bullet Hole for Trajectory when a Shot Misses ( Not really applicable in "GR" ).

- Dust or Debris Kicked up by a Made or Missed Shot in relation to where the Target was or is will also provide direction to a skilled Shooter who is returning Fire.

This is in essence why You make 3 Hides...

A Primary.

A Secondary.

And a Tertiary Hide.

All with Egress routes to each subsequent Hide no matter how many You set up.

Sniping in "GR" isn't perfect I'll agree but Its not that bad either and it is much better than some Posters have professed in this thread...

;)

Sincerely,

Hmmm, that hardly happens to me.

What I usually do I try to kill as many of them as possible, if my team mates dont pick them off first.

Maybe someone will have a more helpful hint since some new people have joined the GR.Net forums.
