Snipers in GR

Recommended Posts

Whenever I use a sniper, I'll shoot a guy from so far away that I can barely make out his figure, I'll be conceled behind a tree and a bush, laying prone, and I'll wait till nobody is looking when I shoot, but any enemies near the target will instantly know where I am, and start filling the tree I'm behind with lead. And this is from like 400 yards. I'm so hidden with the ghillie suit and everything, that in the replays, you couldn't see me if the camera wasn't centered on me. Now, am I doing something wrong, or is this just a flaw in the game? I know it's a cardinal sin to compare GR and operation flashpoint, but I've played both games, and while I'm definately a fan of GR, I think sniping was better organized in OF. I could snipe and not be seen, and I actually felt like a sniper.

While on the subject, I think GR lacked any real use of snipers, by the enemy. I don't think I encountered a single sniper in the entire game. How Come? then again, if the enemies can spot you and are accurate at 400 yards with an AK, I guess they can count as snipers, huh?

Use a basic tactic. shoot and relocate.

Try also silent rifles, the AI takes a little longer to figure out where did the shot came from.

If you want to hunt snipers try the Sniper mission pack by SM Canuck.

You can grab it in the DL section or at

I am sure you'll be satisfied, if they dont shoot you first...

Sometimes if you postion yourself in a bush where your rifles barrel is concield, the muzzle blast will be hardly seen. This gives you ample time to move over to another location and setup.

Online play is recommended for sniping, unless you dont have a spotter or someone to cover your six. <_<

Your camo and situ are not a factor in the AI locating you - different story against human opponants.

Our resident snipe might be along to add some advice for you, in the meantime you might like to scan his two page sniper report.

i hardly doubt the kill you form 400 yards ( 365,76 meters ) away, since these maps are just about 400 X 400 meters.... and, the fog sustem in the game engine, makes it impossible to wiev that distance :)

though, i have to agree, that the enemy ai might be a bit god like sometimes, though, they aren't expert marksmen, thats for sure ;) i have several times been suprised by enemies, in an area i thought was clear, though, i learnt otherwice the instance they opened fire against me, and, i have several times, not only lived to return fire, but could have walked away unharmed, shaken, but unharmed :)

but, it is, generaly, a bad idea to kill someone, and stay in that place aftherwords :) ( unless you're playing defend that is )

Yeah on GR typical killing range with a sniper is about 100-250 meters give or take, and a assault rifle is used for 100-200 meters, and a 7.62 x 39 mm bullet is lethal up to 900-1100 meters. of course thats if you actual get hit by a stray one. <_<

Until we all get goverment grade super computers, I dont know if there will ever be a close to real life sniper role in games.

Just my opinion though

You're not alone Cavalier, I notice the same problem almost everytime I play co-op, offline or online. Most people ignore it, or pretend it doesn't exist, or blame you for your lack of skill... BUT, the enemy AI really is quite questionable.

The common retort is that if the AI didn't react with godlike reflexes the game would be too easy. This is true to a point, yet one could argue that if the AI was toned down more, and the missions/game types were just prepared better, the AI wouldn't need to be so crazily stacked.

And yes, I know, Elite is SUPPOSED to be insanely difficult, yet there are better ways of doing this aside from increasing the AI's stats. Hopefully Redstorm/UBI realizes this before they release Raven-Shield, or I'll just stick to LMS again.

I do love the enemies behaviour and ability to maneuver stealthily, but it's pitch black, I'm lying in great cover at 200m, and right after I shoot my target I'm suddenly being fired at from 3 different locations instantly. They have no night vision, no scope either, and are instantly able to decipher where exactly my single round came from and fire back in the blink of an eye. Riiiiiiiight. Gotta love that realism.

I have to explain this for the i don`t know how many time.

Snipers are not impossible to be discovered and killed in real life.

You can judge where a shot is comming from by:

SOUND you can judge the direction, Bullet entry exit point a more exact location, from the time the bullet hits ant the time you hear the shot the distance from wich is fired(if you didn`t hear anithing afther the bullet impact then it must be a Supressed sws and the maximum range from where the shot came is 300m) muzzel flash if present.

The in real life the enemy would call mortar or artilery or even airstrikes on your aproximate position and blow you and your magic ghillie suit to the sky(of chourse artilery is not simulated in GR as firesupport).

This said the AI in lack of artilery,is programed to rush as stealthy and covered to your general location .

I agree that RSE could have implemented a animation in wich afthere the AI takes cover should change to a binoculars and search 3 second for you and then do evrething like they do now.

Think of the Delta Force series you bring a M40 with you get up on a hill and kill 50 enemys and they would just turn in the direction from wich the shot came WAY MUCH REALISTIC THAN GHOST RECON :wall: .

Think of the enemys Russians, that are very skilled in Counter-Sniper operations the checens have the best snipers in the whole Terrorist comunity with both experience and knowledge.

Rite lets sort this it's total ******* how the enemy from long distance turn round and shoot at the very bush you just sniped from out of the many bushes and trees around that bush you just sniped..However would make the game too easy if you could snipe your way through the mission unless they combatted it by having their own snipers that would be well hidden would be more challenging to have a team member sniped and then you trying to figure out where the shot came from.I have done normal skill at arms in the field in normal DPM's with grass stuck in my helmet and Combat 95's wuth ppl shooting with SA80 and it aint always that easy to spot them even with the crack of an SA80.Either ways don't usually ever use a sniper in GR just no need. sniping at 100m aint exactly sniping.

Yeh, AI = Artificial Intelligence, how many people do you know either a Ghost Recon Player, or a real rifle special ops sniper, can turn and pick out a hidden sniper like he was standing 10 feet infornt of him with a big red sign on his head "shoot me here".

Should be ASI "Artificial Super Intelligence".

i don't know guys....

i have multiple times been in long firefights with the enemy ai

both as sniper, and with other weponds.

sure, they do sometimes blast me away with their first shot, but thats usualy because i've made a mistace ( like not clearing the area, so when i fire the rifle, a bad guy stands 10 meters to my left :( , shooting multiple times from the same place, or just played to rambo like )

but, generarly, i think they as ofthen as not, fail to do that, atleast if i comes on them as a suprice, but if they know were i am, and were i'm going, they just have the gun aimed that way already, finger on the triger, all set to blast me out of that round

sure, the ai could have been better, witch game has an ai that doesn't need improvement? ( when the ai is so good that you just place the troops and officers in a camp, and tell them what their objective is, and they'll sort out the rest, it'll sure be good anough! ), but it could have been a lot worse! ( like in the df games )

Basiclly, your gonna need to take one when you play SP. When you set down your team to cover a area, more then often the sniper on your team will pick off a enemy from afar while your riflemen just look at them and let them get closer before shooting.

Its true the snipers arent used more effectively in GR, but heres the thing-people use them anyway and hardly have problems.

I guess its all about how you use them and not how you take on a whole platoon of enemies.

WHat I do is have the sniper as leader of A team and take a rifle man with him, snipe a enemy then press page down and switch to rifleman to pick off the enemies that are stupid enough to rush or stand up.

But the great thing is about this game is you can play anyway you want and use any strategy you can.

I agree with the shoot-and-relocate tactic. It's almost a must if you don't want to get fired upon from every single enemy around from all possible angles.

About silent rifles, and this also goes for a silent pistol when it comes down to taking out foes at close range, is that the power of the weapon is diminished and it usually requires multiple shots to bring foes down.

Head shots are the safest yet not 100% effective. I've posted in previous threads that I have shot enemies in the head/neck area and the guys not only can survive, they hide and take you down at the first opportunity they have!

I'm just trying mods now that I have finished GR/DS/IT in single-player ELITE level. Perhaps I sould try a multiplayer server and experience GR playing agains humans. :)

Wanna try GR and put your skills and nipers to the test? Try the "New-Cold-War" mission mode for single player. It's pretty hard. It works with patch 1.4.

My 2 cents.

Have fun!

Best,

G-Man.
