French Trip

An elderly gentleman of 83 arrived in Paris by plane.

At the French customs desk, the man took a few minutes

to locate his passport in his carry-on bag.

"You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs

officer asked, sarcastically. Whiting admitted he had

been to France previously.

"Then you should know enough to have your passport ready."

The American said,

"The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it."

"Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports

on arrival in France!"

The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look.

Then he quietly explained.

"Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944

to help liberate this country, I couldn't find any Frenchmen

to show it to.

BURN!!!!!!!!!

I have already spoken to police officers during the Normandy Landing Remembrance Festivities wanting to show me the Netherlands troops landing beaches on my map, so -well- happens.

I have to admit nonetheless that not every english-speaking person of over 70 years of age telling me about his passport-not-show will make me think of the landing, and I already have a heavy interest in the subject.

Just too rare.

What do you mean by BURN though ?

I met a guy at our local NAtional Guard armory, well, the old one.

Anyway, I was at a garage sale there, and this man walks up to me and says "It's been a long time since I've been here." I looked at him, and he says "Last time I was here we were getting ready for WWII"

Turns out the guy served 18 months, and had been a member of an Artillery company stationed locally at the time. He's one of two reamining from the group. Crazy stuff.

What do you mean by BURN though ?

This comes from a TV show here in the states called That 70's Show. When someone pulls a practical joke on someone, or finds out something and lets everyone know, it's a burn.

"Burn" predates That '70s Show – it's just American slang. We were saying it in the mid-80s.

Obligatory 'Laura Prepon is way hot' comment.

Ah okay, didn't know that one. Thanks for the explanation!

A bit aside of the conmemoration event for the normandy landing was a meeting of an american soldier who had landed on omaha at the time, and a german soldier who was on omaha manning an MG42. Turned out that the american had been well inside the cover arc of the MG, and as such they already had "seen" each other during the landing, only to have never met until the 60th conmemoration event. Strange sometimes.
