ELSA nVIDIA GeForce 6800 ← Save some cash and get a 9800 Pro 256 now, and take the savings and add RAM. You'll be good for a good while then, and by the time prices come down on the new gen stuff, software will actually have caught up with them. Crimson
If you want to take that route, then I'd suggest reading this.
CR6
Yup, I'd agree that if the prices for a Radeon 9800 Pro and GF 6600 GT are equivalent, the 6600 GT is the way to go, especially if you've had a good experience with your previous Nvidia GF 4 card. The Radeon 9600XT's are priced the same as the old Radeon 9800 Pro's and offer just over half the performance - it's one of the worst buys out there. The Radeon 9800XT's are not much faster than the Pro version, and again not worth the price mark-up. ATI is hitting back soon with the upcoming Radeon X800XL which I believe is to compete directly with the 6600 GT, and will be the best price/performance mid-range ATI card this year. Only prob is that it likely won't be out for a month or so, and only in PCIe versions. The bridged AGP version will likely come out later this year. snakebite1967
the X800XL is competing with the 6800 GT and beats it in quite a few tests plus its $100 on average cheaper. Id wait until spring time unless u need a card now if so then a 128/256 9800 pro is your best bang for the buck, if u can wait then either a 6800 gt or X800XL will be the better choices and both will be available by spring in agp and pcie
stormcrow
Food for thought there gentleman........once again many thanks I will be looking online whilst keeping your advice in mind...... .The 6600 GT looks very tasty I have to say, although I do have a month or so before actually buying so maybe I iwll keep my eye on the X800XL and 6800GT. Thanks guys.....
