what happened to me during last nights game

Recommended Posts

Hi guys I'm back online

as those of you who were playing last night may have noticed I disappeared mid game just as we were getting into a great firefight (hope you guys made out OK)

Well, my PC suddenly turned off on me - the monitor and desk light was on so I knew it wasn't a powercut - so I checked the usual stuff fuses and wall sockets Etc, but to no avail the PC wouldn't power up at all. Given it was 6am, I had to called it quits and leave it till after I'd grabbed some sleep.

So first thing, I went through all the tests and it turned out my new 5 week old power supply had died  , fortunately I was able to nip out to the local town and grab a fairly good replacement.

and after a rewiring job (aren't PC PSU power looms fun <_< ) I connected it back to the mains and flipped the power switch (whilst holding my breath) the PC powered up and whirred into life like nothing had happened, Phew

the replacement has been running now for 45 minutes and seems to be fine so hopefully it's now sorted (and nothing has been damaged in the outage).

So catch you guys later for some more great games  and you can let me know how you made out taking the enemy camp :)

Pave,

Sad to hear that your PS blew out on ya. Particularly bad timing. We managed to take out the sniper, airborne sf and get out of Dodge but couldn't extract without you so I took us all out (along with the humv and extract boat) with largish satchel charge.

Glad to see that you're back. I lost a PS myself a while back and ended up replacing it with a nice 500w high end/dual fan ball-bearing unit. I swear that the extra juice makes the unit run better.

:) Hey Pave, we were wondering what happened to you!

Well we moved in on the last camp and starting picking off the sitting ducks with no problems. Then, while scanning for targets we could hear the distinct sound of sniper fire. We grabbed sand and scanned every bush and rock that we could see...no eyes.

We continued to be pinned down by sniper fire nevertheless. Then a helo dropped some enemy reinforcements on the camps perimeter and we made quick work of them. We got a nice message that all our objectives were complete and we should "get the hell out of Dodge". But then it began again...SNIPER FIRE.

In desperation, we began scanning again, and we lost El Nino to the sniper at one point. Gordo directed us to look at a particular patch of bushes that he thought the sniper might be near. Finally I located the devil a bit south of the suspected area. This guy was 500M away and looked like a part of the bush! I called out his location and emptied two M4 mags at him (couldn't hit him). Frijole had the ACOG machine gun and put several volleys of rounds at the sniper while we all tried to place some shots on the guy. Finally he fell dead!

We got in the Humvee all bloodied and tired and made our way back to the boat. Once we got there, the boat wouldn't extract so we planted a satchel and called it a win!!

:o= That was one heck of a firefight, and also the first time I have ever made it to extract on that mission!

Particularly annoying when you take time to select a decent PSU in the first place  :wall:

Yeah, as you know the whole reason I upgraded the PSU was because I was upgrading my graphics card to a BFG NVIDIA 6800 Ultra OC which recommends a beefy PSU with two separate power rails.

and I did a lot of reading up recommend PSU's and scoured countless forums for views and comments before selecting the ANTEC 480w NEOPOWER

NeoPower.jpg

*which has a unique cable management system, instead of a fixed loom the Neopower uses a "clip in" system so you only connect the number and type of connectors you need instead of a ton of connectors you dont need and run out of the ones you do.

It seemed a great supply, well recommended with a ton of features and it ran great since I put it in and was a piece of cake to connect up.

Guess my one was a "Friday afternoon" production run :P , Oh well it's got a 3yr warranty so just only have the hassle of returning it to sort out.

Even though I was pressed for time and with very little selection available to choose, the one I managed to grab today seems good it's a Q-Tec 550w Triple fan.

14102.jpg

It is higher wattage than the previous one and has a cheesy "Goldplated" Finnish (who's gonna see it inside my PC :P ) It had the "old fashioned" cable loom octopus  to contend with, but had a good number (& all the right type) of connectors I needed.

seems to be running fine, I'll need to take it on a marathon gaming session to test it fully

Frijole had the ACOG machine gun and put several volleys of rounds at the sniper while we all tried to place some shots on the guy.  Finally he fell dead!

hehehe... several rounds... a full box or two.

And I'm not sure who does the weapon models/configuration, but it sure seemed that that 249 shot like a laserbeam.

It's wierd, the recoil of the first round sends the sight picture up a little bit, but it's like the next round that comes out starts at the original site position, not the higher, recoil-adjusted position. It almost looks like a sewing machine when the rounds hit the dirt. Just hole the trigger, and all the shots land really close without "walking" up the sight picture.

damn good games tho.

and yeah, re-wiring power is not fun. (especially if you happen to be colorblind like myself)
