Well, the plan was for more than just Phantom, but since you all don't want me joining in your little group, I'll take my copy and go somewhere where I am appreciated for my n00bness.  :'(

Hey Zjj you got a sister?? I want this game too...... ;)

You could download an OFP demo, that would pretty much set you up.

I have seen this mentioned so many times in this forum it is causing me to re-evaluate my interest in VBS1.

Could I ask some of the experienced VBS1 players a question? In terms of single-player experience, is VBS1 far superior to OFP Resistance with all the missions out there for it, or would I really be paying $500 for what is essentially the same thing with nicer graphics? The impression I am gathering here is that VBS1 is the ultimate multi-player experience, and have seen few posts extolling the virtues of the single-player experience.

To be honest, I've only played the original (classic) OFP and after buying installing the GOTY edition last night and cranking up the visuals, it really aint all that bad!

As someone who is interested primarily in single-player squad combat, would VBS1 be a good idea?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks

If it's single player you're after, then you'd be better with OFP, as you have three good campaigns to play. Personally I've found that most of the VBS1 missions out there (currently) are quite poor. Unless you have no problem making your own missions with the VBS editor, Flashpoint would be a better decision.

The main advantage VBS has over OFP (other than graphically), is that most of the extra content is made by the developers, and is therefore of very high quality, and you don't have to deal with the palaver of downloading loads of different mods, a la OFP.

Of course, having lots of nice addons is pretty useless unless you have some good missions in which to use them.

Thanks for your honest opinion Ranger. I believe I'll take your advise and stick with OFP for now.

I have noticed how alot of missions available for VBS1 out there are actually OFP missions that have been converted...that's when I thought "wait a minute..."

I just have to delete that drool-inducing movie that I downloaded from their site and stop teasing myself with it, heh heh. Watching that smoking helicopter spiralling downward made me feel like a kid at christmas anticipating a bb gun!

edit: For the record, I still won't be able to stop envying you folks...I seriously hope that CT are like the rest and don't get back to me with the info I requested...if that fellow replies I fear he may snag me hook line and sinker

Update: I feel morally obliged to mention I just recieved a reply from Codemasters in regards to an info request for [OFP: DR]...a request I made last night! And while they were not able to answer my questions, the letter was well thought out and obviously written by someone who read my entire e-mail...apparently customer service is still important to them. Kudos to Codemasters.

Having not played OFP ever, I'd still stick by what 2nd said. The beauty of the thing is getting online and playing. Single player? It's passable if you don't have anyone to play with, but it seems at least several of us are generally online, no matter the time of day, so that's not really an excuse. :D I'm sure Chook, Gordon and SC (to name at least 3) can be found there at all hours!

Then maybe we just have different standards. I've just found that too many of them use an overabundance of frills and extras - like camels. One mission I played has bloody patrols of camels in an already OPFOR-crammed town.

Too many of them use SASR for my liking. Most of them are SF-based things with samey objectives, and some of them are just ludicrous in respect to the number of objectives you have to complete.

Others have been released seemingly without having been completed. You'll complete one objective only to find that the rest of the map is empty.

I just tire of playing identical missions over and over. I'm quite the realism fan, and that is something that is lacking from most missions in terms of realistic objectives (and number thereof), and very few of them I've played have come anywhere close to simulating actual scenarios, which is something I was looking forward to with VBS.

That is why there is a misson editor...have at it. You really can't complain, unless you paid for the missons. Dekela, hotshot, etc make the missions for free just so their vbs mates can have more fun. I find that there are a wide variety of missions available. From single objective missions, ie capture the airfield, to multiple objective missions with all kinds of stuff throw at ya. And I like them all.

And 5 will get you 10 he's already working on some missions of his own.

well then, we can sit back and judge what he does, now that will be interesting. if he can do better than the likes of me and vipe's, than fine, try as he may, from all his experience

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but saying the above about missons that people create for free and using much of their own free time to do so is tactless...IMO of course :D

2nd, just out of curiosity how many actual combat scenarios have you been involved in? I'm not trying to berate you or something just trying to see where you are coming from. I have been in no actual combat or even the military, so I have no clue. I have read a few books (mainly vietnam LRRP and mobile gorilla force ones) and the current vbs missions don't seem too far off base. The MGF would be in their AO for months just taking out targets and doing recon. That is of course unless the ###### hit the fan then they would be exacted or killed one.
