Latest news: EA might get swallowed by an even bigger fish

http://firingsquad.com/news/newsarticle.asp?searchid=7582

EA an acquisition target?

GI.biz reports how Rupert Murdoch is coming up from down under to 'kick the tires' of some gaming companies.

Speaking at a US investment conference, Peter Chernin admitted that News Corp was "kicking the tires of pretty much all video games companies" - up to and including market leader Electronic Arts.

"We see [games] as a big business and would like to get into it," Chernin told the conference, according to a report in today's Financial Times.

"We are struggling with the gap between companies like Electronic Arts, which come with a high price tag, and the next tier of companies," he explained. "These may be too focused on one or two product lines."

Here's even more:

EA says they did talk to Ubisoft, says not hostile

http://yahoo.reuters.com/financeQuoteCompa...14399943_newsml

LOL, too funny, in that piece EA say "Everyone thinks that we never had talks with Ubisoft.", well that's because the Board of Directors at Ubisoft said "in the absence of information from the company Electronic Arts regarding its intentions".

It's like a school yard debate, not like market leaders in the biggest entertainment sector negotiating.

Well I don't think EA acquits themselves that badly in the PR department, but Ubi just about everything that comes out of Ubi PR & Marketing sounds like a raging twit-fest fighting for tryout for parts as Monty Python extras..

It would be funny if so much money wasn't spent on that stuff...

Electronic Arts, ESPN hook up in exclusive 15-year deal

ESPN brand and programming to surface in EA sports titles on all platforms; deal is second blow to Sega Sports and Visual Concepts.

Electronic Arts broke the calm of a national holiday today by announcing a licensing deal of epic proportions. For the next fifteen years, EA will be the sole licensee of the ESPN brand in the area of sports games, which will include console, handheld, PC, and wireless games.

Games with leverage the ESPN brand will make their way to retail sometime during calendar year 2006, "upon the conclusion of ESPN’s existing video game licensing commitments."

The news is the second blow to current license-holder Sega (and its Visual Concepts development studio). It recently lost the right to publish sports games using the NFL license when EA scooped that license up. Now, it loses the right to the ESPN brand as well.

In a statement released just minutes ago, the world's largest game publisher said, "The relationship will include established EA SPORTS franchises--which will be enhanced by ESPN telecast, print and online content--as well as new sports games to be published by EA based on ESPN media properties."

The agreement is for fifteen years "with an option to terminate after ten years under certain conditions," the statement said. The agreement gives the publisher "exclusive first rights" to all ESPN content for simulation sports games.

Not to mention they already bought the licenses to the AFL about a week ago.

From the outside, it looks even more like there are reprecussions to anyone trying to "challenge" EA.

"Geeez. They sure do like to put their competiton out of business, or greatly hamper their ability to create a similar product."

uh i know of few companies out side the "friendly competitor" range that dont use that as there guiding light.

It looks like EA's goal isn't  ".... getting great games out there..." so much as it is  "Getting great games by other devs out of there"

Heck, not just EA it looks like Ubi too -- and to me it looks more like the goal isn't "....getting great games out there..." so much as it is "Getting all games out there..."... You know quantity vs quality "If we own all the franchise or titles for a game theme it won't matter if they stink..."

Ubi virtually announced this intention with their press release that stated their goal to become the single source of all tactical realism gaming around the time they bought the rights to do the Console version(s) of America's Army...

Suli, that's a mighty fine signature you have there, and awfully intriguing! Reminds me of a similar Linux byline "Dream of better tools..." Would you care to elaborate on any background regarding what your sig implies?

That's right. I'd forgot all about that statement. They should stick to that statement and turn PC GR2 into what it should be.
