When you buy a game

Recommended Posts

I'm just curious how many people actually finish a game when they buy it. I've played through KOTOR on the good side but not the bad yet. Doom III has yet to be completed. Far Cry is still chugging along, I finish parts at a time. I'm stuck on Silent Storm. I know some games you can't really complete because they are so open ended and have huge replay factors but still, it seems like I want to go out and buy a game or two for Christmas but I have all this gaming potential right under my nose? What should I do?

Go and buy some new games, keep playing the rest of them, get out in the sunlight once or twice a week.

You raised a good point, I have bought a lot of games I did not finish cuz I thought they sucked.

Games I played and finished - Quake, Hidden & Dangerous, HD 2, GR (DS,IT), COD, SOF, Diablo, Red Alert 2, Commandos. Not that many, but, I don't buy a lot, demos save me a lot of money. Example - Ravenshield.

i also finish most games i buy. the only ones i have never finished were Ghost Recon IT & DS ( bought them to make better mods and play all the cool mods ) and Raven Shield; never got beyond the first 2 missions in that game.

I finish all of mine unless they suck and for those it's uninstall and sold to some poor unsuspecting soul. At a bargain price of course. Lucky all the ones I've bought that sucked came from the bargain bin so I didn't take to big a hit on them. :P

I try to finish them, but it can take time. Currently I'm doing Doom 3, Half-Life 2 (almost done) and Need for Speed Underground 2 (almost done too). The problem is that I buy new games so often, I seldom get done with one before starting on another. Then I suddenly have less time or less interest in beating the first one. (For example, I haven't touched Half-Life 2 since I got Underground 2.)

I've also yet to finish Hidden & Dangerous 2. I was at one of the last missions when the harddrive crashed and the savegames disappeared. I started over, but got distracted by the hordes of newer games. Same thing with Call of Duty - got pretty far, then had to uninstall to make room for Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. (Which I beat in two sittings and wiped again, only to start on another new game :P)

It really bugs me to have unfinished games on my PC though, so I try to beat most games as fast as possible.

As for games with multiple endings (Knights of the Old Republic, Jedi Academy, Deus Ex & Invisible War), I always try to get all the endings. I'm a total completion and exploration freak - if there are multiple ways to do a part of the game, I have to try them all and then re-do the one I liked the most.

The newest games that I have no intention of beating is Soldner and Ground Control 2. GC2 was good, but it kept crashing <_< Wasn't that fun anyway..

I finish most of my games. Sometimes I can't beat a level or something and I give it up but usually I will come back after a while and beat the level and end up finishing the game. Most of the time the only games I don't "beat" are games that are too difficult or to boring to complete.

I sometimes feel this nostalgic phase come on me and I want to play old games too. Like one day I popped in Swat 2 and played it for like a week straight. Then it got boring and I moved on. That's why I think it's important to save all the games I buy. I mean, if you just spent $40 bucks on something, to sell it for a third of what you paid seems crazy. What if you want to play it again? I also save all the boxes and manuals, they are all in perfect condition. Call me crazy but I think the boxes are as much a part of the game as the game itself.

@ Dilligas - Nice sig m8! :)

For games like GR1 I just had to finish the SP. If I hadn't I'd have felt like I neglected the game I love so much.

But other games I normally just use the SP to get used to the game and then move over to MP. Take HL2, I'm on the last level, but I can't be bothered to finish it. I don't think this is a bad thing mind, as most of the end sequences of games or the final piece of the jig saw is a big anti climax imo.

I have a few that I haven't finished. I can't remember if I finished Raibow Six, but I did finish Rogue Spear and Urban Ops (but not COE or BT). Racing games I have yet to do a complete season in SP. I have about half the games that I haven't finished.

In MP I have finished all my FPS games. I get up a team of people to complete them (usually we beat the missions in MP before I do in SP).

ive only finished one game for as long as i can remember and thats fable on xbox. i usually end up getting really fruistrated, throwing the controller across the room, and taking the game back to trade it in for 1/10000000th of the price i bought it for out of spite. sucks ... i did that with r63, splinter cell (1 and 2), ninja gaiden and a bunch of other games that were otherwise really good. the only games i tend to keep are sports especially nfl 2k5 and fifa 2005. the only 2 games i always go back to playing are alpha centuari and ghost recon ... its not so much finishing the game but how well i play it ... but i stick to using the same characters most of the time.

wierd, i know. loco.gif

[edit] dilligas, that is a really nice sig!

Hard to do.

Far Cry got a little tedious toward the end but I managed to stick with it - even through the atrocious final map. Crappy end to a great game.

I gave up on Doom 3 near the end (in fact started playing on cheat mode halfway through cuz it was repetitive and I just wanted to see the story arc.)

I dunno if I'll get through True Crime which can be annoying and lacks a lot of the freedom on GTA.

Ditto for FSW - I'm under halfway through and already bored. Suppress, flank, suppress, flank ad nauseum.

But In the old days I finished them:

R6

GR

Elite Force SWAT 4

Warcraft II

GTA

Baldur's Gate

Heck even SpecOps.

I feel obligated to finish games, unless I really, really hate them. Example; Conflict: Desert Storm II. What a piece of crap that was. The first time I played it I thought that maybe you had to complete the first game before it let you play the second. Turned out it was just really, really bad.

So, if I like a game I finish it, even if it gets repetitive or boring, I stick with it if I liked it initially.
