Dick Splash 23
MCV - Friday November 26th 2004 Clancy's military heroes bleed sales across 2004 Different media in the Clancy series' keep the franchise alive and killing .........Tom Clancy is another fine example of how book plot and gameplay can complement each other. Yet it was not a mindful marketer that spotted the Tom Clancy opportunity as the author himself co-founded the original Red Storm development studio. Bringing the award-winning formula to interactive entertainment in 1998, the series went through a number of publishers until finally being purchased by Ubisoft in 2000. Since then a succession of releases has followed, peaking financially in 2003 when the Splinter Cell craze exploded. Although down in value year on year, the Tom Clancy franchise has a major new release still undercover, with Ghost Recon 2 due late this November. However this title is scheduled later in the year than previous launches and subsequently the franchise may not show growth in 2004. Furthermore with Splinter Cell capturing over half the series total revenue's and Chaos Theory slipping until 2005, 2004 is looking to the least successfull series to drive sales. It is clear that Tom Clancy's project involvements are paying dividends. Gameplay based on books and books based on gameplay enables marketing reach to be timed and continuously complemented. With the Splinter Cell book just about to launch, roughly eighteen months after the original game, and a Rainbow Six film scheduled for 2006, the brand is regularly given extra dimensional boosts. However this book, game, movie relationship will not be complete without the obligatory industry promotional item. Have you got your Tom Clancy T-shirt yet? DS
