Cpl Ledanek 247
don't know if this happened to anyone b4. But after installing SP2 we're having problem connecting the 2 pcs. On XP pc, we can see that the cables are being unplugged or plugged on both pc, but when we try to ping them, it would time out. Am I a victim of SP2? what route should we take? Q2: does the distance of two pc matters? accdg to friend, main cable in the basement where we connect the crossover cable, the win98se pc on 2nd floor, winxppro on 1st floor. cable travel is estimated at way over 100 ft...no alcohol were involved in this measurement. thanks a list of what to do would be appreciated
Specter 0
Sadly, yes you are. What you need to do is to reinstall your NIC drivers. And as a very good idea, reinstall your chipset drivers as well. Also, check to see if XP Firewall took things over. With SP2, it has a nasty habit of doing that, and will cut you off from your LAN. In answer to your second question, yes, distance matters, but your 100ft. measurement is well under the max. The max is 100 meters, or roughly 280 feet. Also, check to see if XP Firewall took things over. With SP2, it has a nasty habit of doing that, and will cut you off from your LAN. ---------how do I remove SP2 without harming my PC? In answer to your second question, yes, distance matters, but your 100ft. measurement is well under the max. ---------if its more than 100ft? friend was telling me I might need a router, he's the brain in this operation? Specter 0
Sp2 can't be removed, at least not successfully without an FFR. At least I have never seen it done successfully because it doesn't completely uninstall. Edited November 2, 2004 by PhantmSniper
supasniper 0
also you won't need another router for the distance, anything in the 250-280 foot area you'd need a hub or switch but not a router
Cpl Ledanek 247
I think I'm royally screwed...I uninstalled SP2 from the Control Panel per other message board found in MS website. still cannot ping the 98SE pc. tried restoring before point of installation of SP2 and it failed. "Unable to restore your PC-something" accdg to message. eeeewwww, all because I want to install DX9c so I can play FSW. Now I two problems: LAN connection and trying to install DX9C without SP2 method. Anychance this might be a bad NIC card on the 98SE? I'll try to physically remove the hardware and install again.... supasniper 0
have you checked the ip of either machine since you changed the settings?
Cpl Ledanek 247
Keeping it simple: xp pro : 192.168.1.101 98SE : 192.168.1.102 but, even with the two PC seating next to each other with 3 FT of crossover connection; same workgroup; even with an attempt of assigning the a domain name, nothing nothing... I get no LAN gaming for awhile
blistr 0
Do you have any anti-virus software installed on either machine? I've had problems before when networking a Win98 system with any other system when the Win98 system was using Norton Anti-Virus software (other than the corporate version). This was due to NAV setting up the Win98 system as a proxy server.

We know to disable the firewall when trying to configure, but never checked the Anti-virus part of Norton. BTW, I guess I have to go thru with that DX9.0C thing again, hopefully this new d/ of DX9.0c will go smoother. Thanks for the tip.
blistr 0
For DirectX 9.0c: http://www.ghostrecon.net/forums/index.php...ndpost&p=224494 Download the file then run the installer to install DirectX 9.0c.
CR6 0
eeeewwww, all because I want to install DX9c so I can play FSW. ← As indicated above, you can install DX9c without installing SP2. This might sound silly but it may actually work: did you try using the WinXP Network Setup Wizard? I seem to recall you can create a Network Setup Disk (floppy) to help you setup a connection to other systems running non-WinXP versions of Windows.

I maybe going senile, but someone did suggest that, when I tried setting up my first LAN game---GR OF COURSE! Ppl here helped me get my IPs correctly. And I remember it did work. But unfortunately, this time it didn't work. I get this message about my hardware(NIC card on the 98SE) is not properly installed. But checking my profiles, its says it does work. We can ping my IP address on my 98SE using IPCONFIG. Thanks, I'll try that DX set up tom....

Cpl Ledanek 247
UPDATE: ITS WORKING!!!! WOOOOHOOO!!!!! Thanks to all that helped. I removed SP2 thru control panel, add/remove. I bought a new NIC with a different chipset/driver....generic NIC I waiting for local friend for next weekend of GR LAN. THANKS EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BTW, Blistr, the reason DX0.exe would not set up initially was that, I wasn't on the internet for the "rest" of the d/l. To make matter worst, I was using Mozilla as a browser, when DX need IE to get the rest of d/l. So let that be a lesson to you kids, you "still" need Uncle Bill Gates for some of your d/l.... Go here and download the redistributable version, and avoid having to use IE at all, or having to put up with that @#$% install while downloading.
