For the last several days, everytime I right click something in a folder, the folder closes. If I right click on a desktop shortcut like a game shortcut, I go to a blank screen and then it restores itself. Once restored, all but 3 icons in the system tray are missing?

Any idea what has happened? I didn't do anything weird in the past couple of days outside of gathering video for a movie I made and trying to uploade a video to my website (what a pain in the ass that was).

For some reason, your mouse's right click function is crashing the explorer.exe process. That much is fairly obvious from your description.

As to what's caused the problem, that's something I can't guess about. Perhaps your mouse drivers have become corrupt?

I'd suggest the usual sweeping with an anti-virus program, spyware remover, and checking your msconfig (System Configuration Utility) startup items to make sure something hasn't hijacked your right-click. You can also look under "Processes" in the Windows Task Manager to see if any programs there look suspicious.

I ran all my scans save for the virus (that is always on as it is and I haven't had a single warning from NAV Corperate). Hijackthis shows nothing either. I did have it right click on the desktop once yesterday, but next time I tried, crash. I hate to think of needing to reinstall windows. :(

Are your system specs the same as those listed in your sig, including OS?

[EDIT]: Do you have Dr. DivX installed?

If explorer crashes everytime you right click, you are probably seeing the incompatibility between the current version of divx and SP2. This is being reported by multiple people.

Divx is a video compression technology that many people have installed on their system.

The divx people are working on it. You can reference their forums posts regarding the subject here:

^^;; Copy the following into a notepad file and save it as 'remove.reg' and run it - this should fix your crash problem

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\EncodeDivXExt]

it will remove the 'encode using dr. divx' option from the right click menu, which remedies the right click = explorer crash problem.

I still run Win2000. The specs in my sig are correct as of Feb 2004 and have not changed since. I did run a hotfix the other night for 2000, I wonder if that may be it?

I do have Dr. DivX installed too. I wonder if this could be part of the problem?!

Whilst the excerpt I quoted is for WinXP with SP2, WinXP is based closely on Win2k. Did your problem with the right click menu begin after installing the hotfix?

If you try the reg edit, remember to back up your registry first. If the reg edit does not fix the problem you can restore the registry by merging the backup with the registry.

Unfortunately I do not have access to a Win2k machine at the moment so I can't test it.

I finally got off my ###### and opened up the registry and tried this after saving the registery key. I have my right click menu back so far. I can right click in a folder without it crashing, dunno about the desktop yet.

Thanks blistr.
