budgie 1
Rather than get all new aircraft, the USMC are opting to upgrade (expansively and expensivley it looks) their UH1 Hueysand AH1 Cobras. I must say they look sweet too...
Arms 0
Sure they look mighty fine. (why get a new whole thing when you can just upgrade right?)
WhiteKnight77 1
Thanks Budgie, but I already knew about them. The biggest visible upgrades are the 4 bladed rotorheads and fairings over the pitch links and swashplates on the mast. They are also getting upgraded engine packages too. The Cobra will also add to it's firepower capabilities. Open Wide:
budgie 1
I understand the Cobra will actually switch from one engine to two (or was that done years ago?) Will the Huey also switch to two engines? Is this supposed to make them a little faster. Sorry for the Q's but I don't know about helicopters.
WhiteKnight77 1
With the exception of the old A-4 Skyhawk, all US Navy and USMC aircraft have at least 2 engines. The Army has Cobras and Hueys with only engine. The Skids and Snakes have used the General Electric T700 Twin Pack engine setup for many years. Turboshaft engines that are used in helicopters provide no thrust from the exhaust outlet. Thrust is provided by the rotordisk in addition to providing yaw, pitch, roll and collective (up and down) control.
TheBlakeness (HotPants) 0
and the A-7, and the F-8, and pretty much most Korean War era fighters. Im sure im missing a few @WK, There is a nice article on the Zulu Snake in the last issue of "Check Six". Whats interesting is they are designing both seats to act as pilot of BCG. I think the USMC is getting a good little bird here

Im sure im missing a few ← Yes, you are correct about those to also. While the F4U4 Corsairs used in Korea were single engine, they were also the last piston engined aircraft to be used in wartime by the Marines if my memory does not fail me. The Navy also introduced the F9 (twin engine) during that time though I don't recall them seeing any combat.

The Navy was also flying the A1 Skyraider well into Vietnam which was Piston, though I also dont recall any use of them by the Marines.
